On October 22 I completed a form SS-5 (Request for replacement Social Security Card) and, per instructions, mailed it with my passport enclosed, certified mail, to my local Social Security office.(5TH FLOOR, 237 W 48TH STREET, NEW YORK, NY 10036 ). My return receipt shows that the package arrived and was signed for by a SSA employee.

Time passes. Now it's a month and a half later - far longer than the 2 week turnaround promised. No response from the SSA. I called their main toll free number and tried to get a current status. No luck; I have to contact my local office. The local office deliberately does not list their phone number.

So now I am left with only one option, the one I wanted to avoid in the first place. I have to take a day off from work and stand in line at the SSA to find out what happened to my application and passport.

Does anyone have a good alternative for me? I don't want to waste a day at the SSA. Thanks!

The UK govt seems to spend more time apeasing non brits and natives....WHY?
this might sound like a rant but bare with: we can't call christmas, christmas anymore. Instead it is called Winter Festival.
Pigs can no longer be shown in advertisements (for fear of upsetting muslims or jews...who i think couldn't really care less about it).
And giving benifits to immigrants from romania or ghana or wherever who can barely speak english ( and spending £38,000,00 in translators fees each year) and denying some natives the same benifits..
what is wrong with our govt? what can they be thinking?

There is a basic thing I don't understand about the bill. It currently costs about $5 billion to insure 6 million kids through the same mechanism. This bill Bush just vetoed would have covered another 4 million people at a cost of $35 billion.

Now I'm not the sharpest knife in the drawer, but doesn't increasing the cost 700% while increasing the coverage 67% seem like a not so great proposition? Does that give one pause to think that Bush might just be right about vetoing that particular bill as written?

I’ve been doing some studying on Bill Clinton’s time in office as President. It appears that Bill is very popular for the way he handled the budget deficit for the United States. However, I’ve read a couple of articles that states that Bill Clinton was not the reason for our debt decrease, but the GOP/Congress was. In fact, supposedly, Bill Clinton opposed the budget at first, but when the budget actually worked out in our nation’s favor, he took the credit. Can anyone offer me any insight on this? Please educate me. Thanks.

Shouldn't we have the right to delay the election if most people had no acceptance of fools? Could we sue the federal government for lack of morals? After all, haven't they been teaching us 'morals' for all this time? I can rember back in the farm days when the fed printed out 'How to' pamplets for mothers and families, and...how to raise our crops, and now our children, now our private lives....where does it end???? The Constitution of course.

He claims this plan is to expensive unnecessary and a waste of money. This plan will cost about 7 BILLION DOLLARS each YEAR.
Yet he has asked congress for 180 BILLION to invest on the war. This will break up to 15 BILLION PER MONTH.

As I follow his point is that our money should be invested on killing people not saving their lives.

Is this guy an idiot or not ????

I've heard Congress is more powerful that the President, but I also heard that they weren't. The Judicial branch is pretty powerful too. Also, is it true the President can give orders to launch nuclear weapons at a desired country? Or does he need some sort of consent?

If they really can find out a lot about us, why different govt. departments make us fill up the forms for getting things done such as immigration, etc? Why not just check their databases...

QUITO, Ecuador - Ecuador will open bidding for a major oil project in a jungle nature reserve in June if the poor Andean country does not receive international funding to abandon the proposal, the oil minister said Monday.

The government is seeking a minimum of $350 million a year from the international community for 10 years not to drill in the Ishpingo-Tiputini-Tambococha fields located in Yasuni National Park, in Ecuador's northeastern jungle. The money is to compensate Ecuador for income it would have generated by drilling for oil at the site.

The jungle area, which holds close to 1 billion barrels of crude, is part of a UNESCO Biosphere Reserve. Some environmentalists say the reserve has more varieties of plant life than the United States and Canada combined.
