Search for an office of escheats in the state of CA - they would handle this sort of thing.

If you can't find that, look for an Ombudsman's office for the state of CA. They typically handle requests from people who don't know where to start their search.

If you got this notification out of the blue from an unsolicited source, be careful about dealing with them. They may have access to a list of unclaimed money in the state of CA, and they may have found an entry with the same name as you, or a similar name. That doesn't mean that you have money there, though. But I bet that they won't tell you anything further unless you pay them something first. And you may pay them $50 to find out that the state is holding $10 for you. Investigate on your own first.

Go to the following website and search for your information.
They will ask you some questions and give you a form to fill out that you can fax to them. At that point they will send the check to you.

Great question and good luck!
