Civic Participation

Should we, can we, demand to know what our government is doing about it? They are our elected officials, sworn to protect us. Have we become complacent? Can anybody relate to the activism of the 60's? There should be a public outcry from citizens today. I don't know about you, but I see this as a potential threat to our welfare. Bush should have been on the TV this morning addressing the nation. Or is it just me? Don't use the 'they don't want to start a panic' excuse; that would insult my intelligence. What I want from my elected officials, is a rock solid belief that America is prepared to defend us by any means necessary. This tendency to not keep America informed is what panics me. I think every voting citizen would benefit from a more open communication from our government. More on this later.

There are many time when I feel freedom of speech is taken to far. There are many of them a couple is the burning of our nations flag ... that Westboro Baptist Church is another. Those totally stupid people would picket our fallen soldiers funerals! These were the very people that fought to keep the rights for hate lovers like the Westboro Baptist Church to say the very things they did.

I know that there is an amendment that prohibits this picketing soldiers funerals that was passed recently. That is good because I really hate to think that there are people out there that are so cruel and heartless as to picket a funeral where the fallen soldier's family is greiving over their loved one.. Same on you Westboro Baptist Church, may you burn in the same hell you wish upon everyone else.

we trained osama bin laden because we wanted him to help us fight the ussr even though we already knew what his ideas were. we helped to start the spread of fundamentalist islamic ideas in the middle east, and then we gave hussein all the chemical and biological weapons so he could help us fight them. saveral decades later we went to war on the supposed notion that we were mad at him for keeping the weapons we gave him.

I have been hearing them all night up and down my street. They are illegal here in the LA Valley (for fire safety reasons) but that doesn't stop people from getting them somewhere else and setting them off.

I know they are illegal but listening to them reminds me of mychildhood in Texas, reminds me of a very traditional way to celebrate the 4Th. of July.

We have legal fireworks displays sactioned and watched over by the city, controlled and set off by the local fire departments.

Why can't our local governments set up a public place somewhere in some open park where normal citizens can come (watched over by the fire department) set off their own fireworks? Where this celebration can still be legally handed down from one generation to another?

I am a Northern Irish citizen and because of this by default, I am entitled to a dual nationality, Irish and British.

Does this entitle me to both a UK passport AND an Irish passport or is it a case of choosing one and sticking with it, because I have already used a UK passport in the past but am becoming attracted to the idea of an Irish passport as well, mainly incase I lose one.

Six months after her return to America, she lives in a homeless shelter in Brooklyn, sharing a room with eight other women and attending a job training program. Her parents live in Jamaica and are barely making ends meet, she says.

"I'm just an ordinary person who served. I'm not embarrassed about my homelessness, because the circumstances that created it were not my fault," says Beckford, 30, who was a military-supply specialist at a U.S. base in Iraq — a sitting duck for around-the-clock attacks "where hell was your home."

It was a "hell" familiar to Noel during his eight months in Iraq. But it didn't stop when he returned home to New York last year and couldn't find a job to support his wife and three children. Without enough money to rent an apartment, he turned to the housing programs for vets, "but they were overbooked," Noel says.

While he was in Iraq, his family had lived in military housing in Georgia.

In New York, they ended up in a Bronx shelter "with people who were just out of prison, and with roaches," Noel says. "I'm a young black man from the ghetto, but this was culture shock. This is not what I fought for, what I almost died for. This is not what I was supposed to come home to."

There are about 200,000 homeless vets in the United States, according to government figures. About 10 percent are from either the 1991
Gulf War or the current one, about 40 percent are Vietnam veterans, and most of the others served when the country was not officially at war.

"In recent years, we've tried to reach out sooner to new veterans who are having problems with post-traumatic stress, depression or substance abuse, after seeing combat," says Dougherty. "These are the veterans who most often end up homeless."

Lost SS Card and want new one to obtain job. Have no other ID or photo ID. I only have certified copy of Birth Certificate. It is impossible to get Driver Lic ID without a social security card and possibly other ID. Same goes for Passport. How do I get around the "new" law that requires ID to be Dr. Lic, Non Dr Lic or passport. Let me clear. I have no other ID. Am 34 and have never been issued a school or work ID. Lived in same city all my life. Mother is alive. Other friends can ID Me but WHAT DO I DO NEXT. Social Security informs me online and by phone must have more ID than birth certificate and that is all I have.
HELP. Am very frustrated. They want illegal immigrants to register and I am not an immigrant and legal and still cannot get a SS Card. Certainly, Ironic.
