An Iraqi veteran was asked on Hardball about Iraq if it was like Vietnam, and he said, "No, we are chasing the ghosts of Vietnam."

What he means is that the Iraq War is being wrongly compared to Vietnam ; yet, when he was discussing it with Chris Matthews, everything he said was the same things I, and other Vietnam vets, were saying about Vietnam.

He, and I'm paraphrasing now, said they couldn't recognize, effectively, who their enemy was because anyone could be. He said a little kid could be greeting you, and you didn't know if he had a frag or what in their hand. He went on to say the people back home didn't understand the war. He stated the good news about the war didn't reach America...

These were all things that were being said when I was in Vietnam thirty-five years ago.

Are we living in denial about what's happening in Iraq? Why did this man write a book that belied what he prefaced his interview on--that Iraq was not like Vietnam, yet what he said was?

My question is based on an experience I've just had in a seperate question. Someone asked about the environment, and the folks who answered seemed to flame on her.
Which brings up my multiple part thought/question.

Is it possible for 'us' to have an open dialougue and then find a communal answer which draws people together instead of pitting them against one another. My example sits everywhere around us. People today dont even try and understand one another; instead, we insist on being 'Right'. Democracy is about dialougue, and working together toward a common interest.
----
the 'b' section of this question is ...If 'we' are so divergent in our thinking how can this democracy last another 100 years? How will 'we' --you and me-- re-empower ourselves and save our dieing experiment...democracy?

I have heard the rumour that more Americans voted for personages on that insipid "American Idol" show than did in our last presidential election.
Are Americans truly that self absorbed and shallow?

I know that no other flag is supposed to fly at a higher level than the U. S. Flag. I remember reading that that in a group of flagpoles (ex. U. S., State, and Organization) that if the U. S. Flag is flown at half-staff, then the other two must also be flown at half-staff in order to not be flown at a higher level. I recently brought this to attention of the pastor a church that has a grouping of three flagpoles, with the U. S. Flag being in the center and also on the the tallest flagpole. I told him that, according to my understanding, they incorrect and was told that it didn't matter as long as the U. S. Falg was at half-staff. I did not agree with him, but could not prove my point.

I have since been searching many sources for this information, and have not been able to find sufficient information to prove my understanding of the proper manner of display of the Flag in this type of situation.

If anyone can help me answer this question, it would be greatly appreciated

No one has gotten it yet. It is the one word that allows for all the frivolous things that have been listed as answers to this question. Reading the answers posted so far makes it obvious why the U.S. is in trouble: people don't even know what she stands for. Shame on us and the schools that didn't teach us what should be easily understood.
