The Catholic Diocese of Kansas City-St. Joseph this week agreed to pay an Independence man $225,000, its biggest settlement ever in a case of alleged priest sexual abuse.

The Diocese of San Diego and the Diocese of San Bernardino, which broke off from its southern neighbor in 1978, agreed Sept. 7 to pay $198.1 million to settle lawsuits with 144 victims of sexual abuse by priests between 1938 and 1993.

In July 2007 Los Angeles archdiocese agrees to pay $660 million to 508 victims in what is by far the largest Catholic settlement of its kind

During the pope's trip to Austria when it was still reeling from a sex abuse scandal that caused the resignations of Vienna's archbishop in 1995 and the closure of a seminary near Vienna in 2004, after some 40,000 pornographic photographs were discovered on computers there.

Are these the values we aim to give our children and what sort of citizens can we expect them to be? Do we have to succumb to this organised ring of abuse?

My friend had a horrible relationship with an extremely jealous guy... it became too ugly to describe. She moved on and he just went crazy. I was always there for her and I didn't think he would ever go as far as he did...

So to make a long story short, he was convicted of rape last November. He's serving a 25 year sentence. Now not too long ago he wrote her a letter from prison with threats and everything else in it. Saying things like "if I escape" and "when I get out, I'm going to" do this and that.

I'd like to know what can be done with this letter. Can he possibly receive more charges/time if it was turned in? Or would it just be disregarded? My friend's scared now and can't stop thinking about him getting out. Should she bring the letter to authorities? Should she throw it away and try to forget him?

THEN what would you think of Immigration? Why is it OK for people of white descent from Europe to come into NYC, but it's not OK for Mexicans to enter our country? What is the difference? That is what this country is all about...

I was in the Army for about 6 months, I loved it! I want to go back really bad, but I have a wait time to heal and get back in shape, and so I have to work while I'm waiting... I just can't find anything as satisfying as training and learning, growing and serving every day. :) I miss it.

I am an US non-resident, who has a tax defficiency for 2005 with the NJ divison of taxation. They withheld my 2006 tax return, but I still owe them $80-$90. I also have a federal debt connected with that deficiency, but the IRS did not offcet that amount from my 2006 federal tax return. The reason for the defficiency, as the NJ div. of tax. told me, is that they have not recognized the payroll stubs as sufficient evidence for me to have paid taxes. My employers did not sent me W2 forms and I used the payroll stubs instead. In May 2007, I received a notification letter that I have won from the 2008DV green vard lottery. I have a concern that this defficiency could be an obstacle for me to obtain a green card. On the other hand one of the conditions under which a GC could be rejected is committed crimes of moral turpitude. As long as the NJ div. of tax. told me, the reason for the deficiency is because they have not seen the documentation they want. For this reason I think that this can not be considered as some kind of a fraud and therefore a crime. A fraud would be if I claim a higher tax return than I deserve and they pay me the higher amount. I was thinking of paying those $80-$90 and clearing the debt off, but I can not get in tough with them – when I call their phone line is constantly busy. For this reason I don’t know how I can pay them.
I would be glad if some of you, who are knowledgeable on the topic of state taxes to give me some advice – could it be an obstacle for a green card, how I can pay them or clear this thing off? Federal debt sounds serious to me though, what consequences could it bring to me?

You are a lieutenant commanding a small force of 15 soldiers who have been pinned down and are encircled by a vastly superior enemy force of 100. Its nighttime, and you have discovered a route of escape and have deviced a plan. its touch and go, and very risky but you have decided to give it a shot. Only thing is one man must stay back and cover your retreat from a spot where one man can really hold off and delay the enemy for at least a few minutes while the others escape. Problem is that he is sure to die as the enemy will eventually maneuver so they can get him in their sights.

How do you select who stays? Do you ask for a volunteer? Do you volunteer yourself as the officer? If no one volunteers, do you draw straws?

I completed a credible academy back in March, in california. I know I have some background issues but I didn't really think they would hinder my chances like this. My issues surround my driving record, employment history, and some other regretable life experiences. I am 22 yrs old. I have never been arrested, detained, nor held for any questioning for a crime. I don't have any DUIs. I did however receive 2 tickets for speeding, 2 tickets for red light violations, and been involved in 3 accidents since I have had my license. I can proudly say those incidents mainly happened within close proximity to one another and I have grown up much since and I have not been involved in any traffic related offense in the last 18 months and still doing well. I must also admit I have had 16 jobs since the age of 15. From which a couple I was fired, but I have been at my most recent Job for 1 yr. and prior to that I was at my job for 1 yr and left to focus on my academy. Please reply if you can help me.

Just watching GMTV on the day that should be Rhys Jones' 12th Birthday... Christ, it's utterly heartbreaking and cruel what his poor mum and dad are going through, now and for the rest of their lives...

The gave a very moving speech in appeal to the mother of his killer, to give him in..

Having seen the CCTV, I'd say that there are people who know who that boy is, (im aware of the fear in that community now) but surely, as the parent of this 'person', if they knew their son had actually randomly shot an 11 year old, something in them would want to give him in to the police...

I dont have any kids...(I did have, but he passed away very young) so I dont know myself what its like to have a teenager... Is the motherly/fatherly instinct so strong towards your own, you'd protect a murderer...??

What do you think... Would you give up your own???
