I completed a credible academy back in March, in california. I know I have some background issues but I didn't really think they would hinder my chances like this. My issues surround my driving record, employment history, and some other regretable life experiences. I am 22 yrs old. I have never been arrested, detained, nor held for any questioning for a crime. I don't have any DUIs. I did however receive 2 tickets for speeding, 2 tickets for red light violations, and been involved in 3 accidents since I have had my license. I can proudly say those incidents mainly happened within close proximity to one another and I have grown up much since and I have not been involved in any traffic related offense in the last 18 months and still doing well. I must also admit I have had 16 jobs since the age of 15. From which a couple I was fired, but I have been at my most recent Job for 1 yr. and prior to that I was at my job for 1 yr and left to focus on my academy. Please reply if you can help me.

Sorry I appreciate all the answers, one thing though, when I worked all those jobs i never intended to want to make those jobs my career. I always thought I would have my own business. Police field fell in my lap and I fell in love with the nature of the work. I have made mistakes, but the only reason I was working was to help my parents out with bills and groceries. Where I lived most other kids my age had the luxury of not having to have a part time job to buy their lunch or make money to buy their own school clothes. I don't mean to seem that i am not taking responsibilty. I would like an agency to recognize the bigger picture. My ambition is beyond being a retail manager or other bottom shelf retail guy. Funny however I have a full time job now and that is what i do. I manage 3 cellphone stores. Go to school and and pay all the bills for my household cause my parents are disabled, and I have to mind my 2 younger brothers. I would just like an agency to see the much larger picture

16 jobs at age 22 is a very bad sign. That alone would put most agencies off. The accidents would contribute and the tickets would be the nail in the coffin. I think faulty has the right answer: join the military, plan on staying for a number of years, go into the MPs/SPs if that MOS is available or maybe firefighting if it is not. WHile you're in, get a degree in criminal justice.
You'll find that a good record in the military will balance out a shaky past.

the biggest problem you have is your driving record, specifically your 3 accidents. Where do Police Officers spend the vast majority of their time? Driving around, patrolling the streets. Letting a guy who is constantly getting into accidents isn't somebody that they want driving around in their Crown Vics... police departments gotta pay insurance too. your red light tickets don't help much either.
most PD will want a 3-5year CLEAN driving record, no accidents or violations. and i'm pretty sure CHP requires a completely clean driving record with zero accidents or violations.
as far as your work history goes... 16 places of employment in 7 years? that pretty much tells them that you will probaly get bored with whatever you're doing in a matter of a couple months... that's not the kind of dependability that the Police force needs or wants.
Either way... keep trying. if you're close to it... try applying to Riverside and San Bernardino County Sheriff's departments... they were REALLY hurting for new-hires a few months ago when i moved away.
Good luck to ya.

Men I am in the same situation, I am 19 but when I was 18 I got a ticket for burning rubber on the street I went to the court they charged me for $81 dollars and the judge said that I was clean so I pay the fine and a week later I got a letter from the dmv leting me know that I have 2 points on my driver's record I was like maddafu@@@ but the most depresing is that I even ask that perro If i needed to go to trafic school and he said that I was clean now I am attending el camino college in Torrance, CA but since I have a driving record I can't work as a cadet officer at el camino he burned my record in purpuse but now I am working on getting my degree in criminal justice I realize that the points are going to take 2 years to go away from my record, and right now I am working in a job with my dad I have been working there for 5 years since when I was 14 but they have been paying me in cash all the time we do construction but my criminal justice teacher says that its very hard to become a police, because they have to do a lot of background checks and all that crab but you can reapply in an other agency for example you can go to Orange county instead of lapd he said that in 1971 he became a lapd officer after being rejected from oc and he tryed oc firt cause he though that they were easier but just don't give up

I know laws vary from state to state, BUT here in Massachusetts you canNOT get into a police academy UNLESS you have been hired by a city/town police department. ONCE you have been hired the city/town then trains you at the police academy for your area. If you are referring to college courses in law enforcement that is totally different than the police academy.

It is very unlikely those traffic tickets and a few accidents are the reason why they aren't calling you. It most likely is something else. Maybe you need to move out to a small town. Where I live all you need to become a cop is an associates degree in criminal justice.

Police officers are always needed. If you are in the academy you know it is no game. Keep your heart in the right place. Respect people and most of them will respect you. It is not just a job your words and actions affect other peoples lives. Hope you do well. The best of luck to you. Luv and luck

If it is a real police academy you graduated from, you should have been a police officer by now. This is mind boggling. You didn't by chance graduate from one of those "security guard" academies did you?
