'Tis true we all should be prepared, but will it give crims even more reason to carry anything from a Stanley knife to even a gun to return the serve if law-abiding Mr. Jones hears wee bumping in the night and rises to protect his goodies.

That's for sure, sbyldy - but is it not so that many crims are more interested not in what size Mr. Jones may be...but of the 45" flatscreen telly and the Cambridge audio system, along with other sweeties in his house. You can't deter the determined - and if the things can get eventually sold for the crims. eventual joy, he'll be tooled up to the lugs. They see it as a cryptic crossword...the more determined they are to solve the problem - the harder they'll work

Thank you for those who have answered so far - not meaning to stir, notice many write what they would 'do to' burglars if they were caught in your house - bravo! Remember our neighbors here in Coventry who would continuously tell us what sort of 'present' they had for burglars who turned up at theirs (with the word 'Rottweiler' uttered at some stage in their claim - ho hum...). Some crims saw that as a challenge, with next thing on their shopping list, a few rib-eye steaks, along with adequate animal-dozing drugs to add. Tis true - most are out & out cowards, but like it or not...there are some who are clever bastards. But just wonder if now, homeowners might realise the less 'thoughtful' (if you will) crims might see the new law as a challenge, and have them become more violent?

Most criminals tend to victimize the weak and defenceless.

In areas where the law-abiding citizens have the legal right to defend themselves the crime rate is lower. Criminals are often detered when they realize they can get hurt.

To be honest this new law will make no difference to me as I have always stood by the thought that if someone came into my house uninvited I would hit them with the heaviest item I could find. There has always been a law that states if someone is to hit you on your doorstep there's not much you can do about it other than claim assault. But should they come into your house and hit you then your acting in self defence, and they would be charged with aggravated assault which carries a higher or rather more serious charge.

Criminals go equipped in any case but if they get the idea into their heads that a householder has the legal right to beat them to within an inch of their lives they might just might think twice.

I think violent criminals would stay they same, remember they are cowards and I think they would think twice, call me para but I have a large iron bar next to my bed and would relish the chance to give someone a whack with it if they tried to rob my house.

The burglar might be "tooled up", but he will be tooled up and dead if he breaks into my house.
That's why most burglaries occur during the daytime, when people are away. Burglars tend to avoid confrontation.

Florida proves you wrong, as do the rest of the Castle Law states.

edit:

In my case one of those "clever bastards" decided he wasn't so clever when there was a .30-30 pointed at his gut. He then dropped his weapon he was threatening me with and ran.
