Traditionally, the liberal was one concerned to protect the rights of the individual from the state, who sought to reform the state.

The conservative was one who sought to maintain the old ways resisting change. The conservative opposed using the armed forces to intervene in foreign affairs, and advocated sound money.

Today we see the term "liberal" applied where "leftist" may be intended, yet we have no actual socialist party in America.

"Conservative" now means those who want to extend government power over individuals' lives - running up the national debt, dictating to the Schiavo family what it should do, and telling people what the government approves in matters such as marriage and abortion. And the armed forces and the CIA are used like a personal tool of the president to go kill anyone he doesn't like.

Who is left today to represent those of us who want less government interference in our lives? Haven't both the liberals and the conservatives ababdoned us?

Police officers are posing as drug dealers to entrap offenders and illegal drug laws have been criticized as being unethical. What do you think? Do you think it's alright or completely unethical for them to be doing such a thing?

Now I know he may be considered a hero to some of you confused people, but for the record Ehren Watada is a coward and a deserter. I sincerely hope he is charged with every possible violation of the Uniform Code of Military Justice.

I refuse to give him the honor of addressing him as Lieutenant. He no longer deserves that title or prestige. How can you turn your back on the men you lead, especially as an officer.

As a veteran U.S. Marine that served in Iraq twice in the Infantry, we all have our own personal feelings in regards what is going on in this war, but REGARDLESS of those feelings they do not supersede your orders, obligation, and oath of loyalty you swore in carrying out the orders of your superiors and defending this nation against all enemies foreign and domestic.

You do not get to choose the mission, the mission chooses you. If every service member got to question the political correctness of an order, you would then have an unprofessional and undisciplined force.

I think a major problem we will continue to have is the lack of cooperation from moderate muslims. If they had taken care of their own problem in the first place, we wouldn't have to be there now.

As was brilliantly put by PragmaticMan here http://answers.yahoo.com/question/index;_ylt=AuzHnoFDJxs9gPZZqZRY2_nY7BR.?qid=20070227174719AA3MlhA these are not a people who know how to run a serious major league government.

I would like to see us;

1. Put a SERIOUS effort towards finding alternative fuel sources. Yes, that means George Bush has to get away from helping his oil buddies.
2. Instead of letting the war be run by PC politicians, have the military do what it takes to destroy the Taliban and ANYBODY putting forward a threat towards the United States.
3. Start to pull out of government building and funding business in the Middle East outside of Israel.
4. Only do a bare minimum of humanitarian aide. It's not ever appreciated anyway, so why put our people in harms way.

It was useful rhetoric - but King George never told us what "the course" was. Now he uses emotion-laden terms like "victory" and oh yes, we must not "lose" or be "defeated", but he does not take the time to tell is what these words mean to him.

A gambler who loses a lot will sometimes gamble even more, in the vain hope that if he bets ever more and more of his resources surely he must win. Wiser players know that there comes a time to cut your losses and get out. Rats will run a maze but eventually figure out NO CHEESE.

Getting out with as few additional casualties as can be achieved makes sense now. Going in was a mistake. Is Bush too vain to admit that he erred? Does he think that wasting more lives and dollars now is going to prove how very "right" he was?

Lyndon Johnson blew his career by unreasonably persisting in his doomed war. Is Bush so dumb that he will make the same mistake?

What does Bush imagine we have to gain by expending ever more of our wealth and lives
