Some of the 14 people who pleaded guilty Monday to being part of a scam that involved the illegal distribution of documents such as Social Security cards to undocumented workers said they sold their own birth certificates and other documents for $100 because they were desperate for money.
The documents were sent by a delivery service to Dodge City, Kan., where undocumented immigrants used them to gain employment, according to court documents.
Federal officials charged the defendants with conspiring to use forged, counterfeit or other documents as proof of entry into the United States or for legal authorization to remain in the United States, according to court records.
The defendants agreed to let U.S. District Judge Hayden Head Jr. decide their punishment, which could range from probation to as many as five years in prison, according to attorney John Gilmore, who represented one of the defendants.
