Hi. I recentely bought 4 gerbils. After a week and a half one of them became very friendly and would quite happily fall asleep in my hands. A couple of days later i noticed it had diarreha but it then cleared up after a day or two. She had a habit of biting the corners of the cage with an almost scraping like behaviour ( plastic fish tank like cage ) and would also lick it aswell. When she would be in my hands she would nearly always lick them (for sweat??). It would regulary go to the water bottles but didnt seem much at all. It was only a day or two after the diarreha cleared up that she had a fit in my hands and passed away.

Recentely one of the others has started to become very friendly and it has the same habits like licking the cages and being happy to lay in my hands. Im really worried as i know animals like a bit of fuss when they are feeling ill.

The bedding, cage etc is regulary cleaned.

Thanks

right now he's so inactive, he's recovering from a URI... i let him play on the floor in the living room occasionally (not much since he's trying to get better), but other than that, he seems quite bored.... i plan on getting him a cagemate a month after he's recovered (along with a 3 week quarantine), until then, how can i entertain him?

My gerbil is just laying there motionless! It's one of them. These past few days, it's been feeling a bit lighter than the other one, but we didn't think it was something important or anything. What if it's sick???!
I know it's alive because its eyes are open and it's occasionally shivering. Also, when I scooped it up in my hands, it flinched but barely moved. Usually it leaps away from my hand in the cage, but it didn't, it was too weak! It's laying there, body stretched out on its belly, and it's occasionally shivering. My brother says it's a stroke, but I'm not sure if it's really a stroke. Is it only sick? What should we do? Will my gerbil die???? :-(

Also, there's red stuff under its chin.

Is it common for rats to eat another rat? Maybe the rat was already dead when they ate it, I'm not sure. But I have 4 rats who apparently ate part of the other one who may have already been dead. They are all females if that matters!

okay so i bought this really pretty female.. she was 4 weeks old and she was fine for a while.

not long after she got lumps and i could feel hertbeats.. she was pregnant and i didnt know when i bought her.. apparently the perstore didnt separate the males from females

anyway.. she had 4 beautiful male babies and all survived.. all healthy... she not pregnant i know again because its been several months and would have gave birth to them already....

my real question.. she still kinda had small lumps on the side of her and they dont seem to be going away... surely not as big as when she was pregnant but still small.... is this normal?

and is her early pregnancy going to shorten her lifespan... she and the little pigs were healthy but im worried now... please help me

thanks so much

I have two female rats that are... I'm guessing about 3 1/2 - 4 months old. I've had them for about 3 months. Anyway, the one loves to run on a wheel and has been ever since I've gotten them. So from running on the wheel all the time, her tail curls up over her back most of the time. I mean while she's walking around, not only when she's on the wheel. It's kinda cool. But I was just curious if anybody else's rats have tails that do that.

We took her to a vet and he did not see any mites on her, but thought that it was probably mites. He gave her a shot for mites, but it did not improve her symptoms.
She is a little over 3 years old. Even as a baby, she had some skin probems, but never this bad!
One day she will have no sores anywhere, but the next, she will have open, raw sores, I am afraid that she is getting worse.
Another thing that I am not as worried about is her hair loss. This does not seem to cause pain for her. She will loose some hair somewhere, then grow it back in, then loose some more somewhere else.
I hope someone can help. I will appreciate any advice!!

I have a 9 month old guinea pig named Chippy. He weighs 2 pounds and he eats just fine. But the problem I am having is he has white stuff on him! It's like guinea dandruff! He's had it since I got him in last December. I never went to the vet cause I thought it'd go away, but it didn't. One day, it was terrible. It was all over him! Little white specks all over his back. I think he may have a fungus infection, but I won't believe that until someone tells me. I also think I should bathe him, but I have read a book about them that says do not bathe a guinea pig unless you MUST. Someone please help me, I do not want to loose another guinea pig!
