There are no Breeds of rats at this time, only types. The species, not breed, of rat that we keep as pets is Rattus Norvegicus, decendant of the wild Norway, or Brown Rat by the same scientific name.

My favorite types of rats are Pink-eyed White, Blues, Fawn, a show-quality Black, a show-quality Siamese, Pearl Merle, Rex, Velveteen, Patchwork Rex, Peach-Fuzz Hairless, Berkshire, Dalmation, and a show-quality Hooded.

I have 100 rats right now in every size and type. I dare not say aloud who my favorites are, for fear of offending one or more of the ratties. They all mean so much to me. Only you will find out who my favorite types are in this answer.

CongRATulations in choosing rats as pets. You'll love the girls. They're small, and busy, and full of mischief. Don't get them too small as they are escape artists from their cages. Wait a minute, that sounded dumb. All baby rats, when you bring them home, are small. What I meant to say was, make sure that you get a line (genetically speaking) of rats that, as adults, are not so small that they can squeeze out of the cage.

All rats have their own personalities and white rats have just as great personalities as any other color and type of rat. It just depends on what white rat you have chosen as a companion. ALL rats have sharp claws, not just the white ones.

As a new rat keeper I would like to send you an invitation to join Holistarat http://groups.yahoo.com/group/holistarat ,a rat-only group where experts can help you care for all of your rats' needs.

There really aren't any 'breeds' of rats. They have different colors and marking, different types of fur and ears, but they are ALL the same breed. Feeder rats, pet rats, fancy rats, big rats, small rats -- ALL the same breed.

I personally love the Dumbo ears and I think they are sweet. Some people say that black berkshire rats (black with a white tummy and feet) are the sweetest.

Do a google search for pet rats -- I bet you will find a TON of information about the colors and types!

Im partial to Females and I love Dumbos...

Females tend to be a lot more active and enjoy company of other rats...

Males are a lot calmer and also make great pets, but they get much bigger and usually do not like to have a cage mate..

I personally like dumbos, they have low set ears that are much bigger and I just fall for them everytime I see them..

I have had 56 pets in my time (not including fish) and 12 of those pets were rats. I prefer hooded rats and if possible I would get small rats. That doesn't mean they're the size of mice but they are a bit smaller which makes them easier to take care of. Hooded rats are more playful and live longer! Who wouldn't want that!

probably females is the way to go they just look better also get them fairly young and small as they will become very tame a lot quicker. You can make your own cage just check out the design from the pet shop. They will chew wood so thicker ply wood is a good idea. Mine love their hammocks which are fixed above the top shelf and made out of cut off jean legs and fixed with soft wire. They do chew them as well also need replacing every few months as get fairly dirty. Good luck and be careful introducing them to strangers as can pee if frightened.

Pomeranians look like a fox? Pomeranians look like a bear? Sorry, but i don't think so. Yes, they have a fluffy tail like a fox but other than that they look nothing like a fox. Bear? Maybe a stuffed bear but i don't see anything bear-like about a Pomeranian. My favorite breed is the American Pit Bull Terrier. Reason: They are strong-willed, confident, prey driven, smart, energetic, loving dogs. I own 6 of them. <---- How could you not love them? (Layla and Roo are in my avatar)

I have two White rats.. White rats have sharp nails and not as much personality like my mixed color one! Here's some helpful hints.. Do not get a rat this is sneezing or looks sick because I got one for my birthday and put it in a cage with my other baby rats and they all got sick.. (Respirator infection) They all went to the vet and got medicine which by the way cost 300 dollars for all three rats .. They are great now and I am so happy I decided to bring them !!!! Here's a picture of a really great cage that they LOVE

i personally love hairless rats. dumbo hairless is a big plus in my book. i usually keep females but males are just wonderful and they are more snuggly. females tend to not want to sit still for long, they're more of the adventurous type who just want to run around and get into everything.
