Will the male have to be about the same age, too?

I think it's pretty risky....that's old for a hamster to have babies, especially a first litter. Alot of female hamsters even have entered hamster menopause by that age, so they can't have babies anyway. (Male hamsters are fertile their entire lives.)

She is pretty old for this. The male does not have to be the same age, in fact it would be preferable for him to be young.

I wouldn't advise breeding this hamster because Syrians are hard to breed from, they often end up eating their babies if not kept in exactly the right conditions. If you insist on going ahead with this I hope you've done your research.

Do not worry. I had a nearly 1 or 2 years old female hamster. I let it breed with the other hamster. And guess what, she had 6 babies.(Althought not all the babies survive)

she's too old to breed, get a young one for this purpose.
