We don't have a Petco where I live, and the Petsmart here doesn't have rats for sell, ever, :( Other Petsmarts do carry rats in a variety of colors.
Petland is the place where I have most often purchased my rats. They always have a wide variety of colors and types of rats that sell for $12.99 each. The high price assures that their rats are going as pets and not feeders. I even have to fill out adoption papers when I get my rats from Petland.
Rats rarely if ever bite. Just to give you an idea, I've had over 200 rats so far and only 2 have been real biters.
Good for you for choosing rats as pets. As a new owner to the world of pet rats I would like to invite you to my rat care group, Holistarat http://groups.yahoo.com/group/holistarat where you will learn all you can about rats and their special needs.

I have owned rats for years. They make terrific pets. There are many breeds and colors for rats. Did you know, they even have pure breed rat shows? Never got in to that myself. Personally I always have had females. They are gentle, if handled often, they become very friendly. I had one who stayed on my shoulder no matter what I was doing. Although it did freak out a few people at the fast food drive thru. Anyway, I have never had an aggressive rat and none of mine all 15 of them, never bit anyone, even if they were handled by someone new. Oh, the reason I only had females was pure ascetics. The males have really BIG testicles and kind of hang out there, to me not a pretty sight. But to each it's own. Good luck, Oh, by the way, they love people food but be sure to keep them on a rat food diet. They can get really fat fast if they eat nothing but people food. It's all the fat and calories.

PetSmart usually has a better variety of rat colors...they usually have the regualr fancy/hooded, which can be black, tan, brown...then they have blue rats...which is like a grey color...they can be solid or fancy marked....
They also cary dumbo rats...which are my personal favorite...they have large ears that sit on the sides of their heads instead of the top...
The prices should be 7.99 for a fancy...8.99 for a blue and 9.99 for a dumbo....they vary slightly depending on what state you are in...
Do rats bite...well, anything with a mouth has the capablity of biting....but as a general rule...no rats do not bite...
I've kept rats for 13 or 14 years now and have been bitten a total of 3 times...twice drawing blood...
Keep in mind, I rescue and adopt unwanted and often mistreated rats...
Unless your rat is very sick or has been horribly mistreated then it will not bite you!!
Feel free to email me with other questions about rats...
Hope this helps...GOOD LUCK!!!

They have basicaly white rats w/ tan heads or pure white and white body with brown heads. the white ones usually have red eyes. You can also buy hairless and blue rats there, but they cost a little more. the standard fancy rat goes depenng on size from 4-8 dollars. They dont require much and are inexspensive to keep, Ive heard never feed them meat as it might cause them to bite. Im not sure if that is true but none of mine ever have and i never feed them meat.

yes, they usually have a few different colors, mainly brown, black, or hooded. Rats typically do not bite alot. but they will bite if they are scared, or sometimes if they are suprised. most rats bite when you stick your finger in the cage without opening the door, but that is just common sense.
Have fun with your new rat. they really do make great pets.

Yes they come in a variety of colors and I would suggest getting a young one. They do not bite but will bite if they are not handled regularly. They are not a pet you can buy and then ignore when you are tired of it or it will get mean.
My rats used to have free run of the house. They would go where they pleased, they would come when called, and they loved to play outside in the grass with us. They are really amazing pets if they get the attention they need.

Petco's usually have eiether White.. or black hooded rats.
You might google "Rat Breeder" in your area. or check out craigslist. getting a rat from a breeder is usually much more healthy and you will have a lot better variety of color and even coat... rats come in standard coat, Rex coat (curly), Harley coat (long fur), Naked rats, etc.. it's a large variety.

A rat??Do you mean a hamster or a mouse like these they use in labaratories?Because rats are dangerous big mice that bite! The colors usually are grey or white..and hamsters can be brown or somehow blond..and also black and white..I hope that you won't buy a rat and buy a regular and harmless little mouse or hamster...
