Fish - September 2006

[Selected]: All categories Pets Fish

I like the fact they have a small footprint and the extras are so easilly available in most pet shops these days.
However, I'm worried they wont be ideal for my fish.
I'd like to use it for my smaller fancy goldfish but I'm worried about the small surface area. Will they get enough oxygen? Are goldfish too dirty for such a compact tank? Has anyone successfully kept goldfish in a biorb? I'm pretty experienced with goldfish but only in big conventional tanks.
Thanks for any advice.

I will put them in my office, so I will buy a small tank. If these types wont fit in small tanks kindly suggest other types that will fit, but they should be colorful.
If there are any tips on how to raise them do not hesitate i am a starter :).

thanx

Are there any certain chemicals/salts you add to the water? What kind of fish do you have? Do you prefer to just let the water set out to dechlorinate it?

I have three established tanks, so I'm not looking for advice here. I'm just curious as to what YOU personally do to your water for your fish.

I clean mine my taking the gravel cleaner thing and sucking up the poop and food and I keep doing that until I only have about 3.5 inches of water in my aquarium enough for my fish to swim around. And all the water is in this big bucket. I wait about an hour and all the poop and stuff are at the bottom I pour the water in and when the poop is about to come out I stop pour it down the toilet and put new water in and all the other chemicals.

I know people do it differently and this takes A LOT of time and if you have a different or faster or better way of doing it please share! I hate cleaning my fish tank this way! Thanks.

I bought the 2.5minibow, and it came with like an under gravel filter. It is a plastic like sheet or w/e, and it goes under the gravel, and then you put gravel on top. Then there a tube that sticks out in the corner, with like a white rock T think they call it.. ANd then in the plastic pipe, there is a small oxygen hose. Would someone explain to me how this system works, and if it's good!? I have no idea how the filter part works.... Its a mystery! :)

I love to watch my fish, and so fascinating to see them with each other. I have Tropical and Gold fish, but special types and sizes. The water falls also is relaxing. What kind of fish do you like the best and do them relax you too?

I just got a Betta fish for my 2.5 gallon. One of my friends had a Betta and put a piece of mirror in the tank so every time in swam by it would flare out it's fins and look really cool thinking there was another Betta there. Does this stress them out thinking there is another fish in the tank? I was thinking about doing it but I am not going to if it stesses it out.

My alkalinity for my tank is 7 (?) and I was told that it needs to be between 8 and 12 (?). I have "reef builder" to raise the alkalinity of my tank and I am trying to figure out how much to use.

My male betta, who is in a small 2.5 minibow, with 3 small platies, is just staying around the bottom, not doing too much. At a LPS, which is good, not like petco or anything, said they should be fine in a 2.5 gal, as long as I change the water a little more often. Is there something unusual with my betta's actions, or is that just normal? DO tehy like being near the gravel on the bottom of the tank? Well now that I think more, he also swims a lot, but also likes being lazy on the ground... Normal?
