How can you just look at your fish and say "yup this is a male alright"

With livebearers, you look at the fin just in front of their tail. If it is round like a fan, it is a female. If it is pointed and straight, it is a male.

With egglayers it is more difficult, some species the male is the more colorful of the two, in others it is very hard to tell because they look so similar. One way is to look at them from above, the female will be fuller bodied and wider than the male. Some species have different shaped heads from the mouth back.

A good way is to Google the fish name and try to find some pictures of males and females. Orrrrrr, you could wait until they spawn and see which one lays the eggs, that would be the female.

Depends on the species. With some fish species gender is very obvious, and with others both genders are practically identical.

In cases where gender is obvious, that usually applies to fully mature fish (so a juvenile male would appear to be 'female' until it matured).

If it is a guppie,it will have colors, and be slender where the females are more thicker. The males have a long thin strip under their belly that the females don`t have, this is the penis I suppose, this is what they use to impregnate the female. All male fish have this, but my most experience is with guppies.Hope I have been helpful

With the guppies the adult males are greater problematic with brighter colorings and longer fins. the variation in intercourse between the neons would be interior the size of their neon stripe, the ladies individuals is shorter and the adult males run all alongside the physique, with the others i'm not sure, yet they'd have the two rather diverse physique shapes or fin length (or the two)!
