In a fish bowl, not very long. In an aquarium that is not overcrowded, and the fish is not overfed, at least 9 year. Had a customers bring in 3 comets ( fish from carnival) that he kept in a 5 gallon tank. The fish were literally as long as the tank. He had kept them for 3 years by changing the water nearly every day. Brought them to us to give away because he had to move back home. They are even larger now and happy in someones pond. I couldn't believe the fish had grown and survived in a 5 gallon tank.

IN A WELL KEPT TANK

Fancy goldfish live for an average of 6-8 years reaching around 6 inches in length.

Normal bodied goldfish like Comets, Sarassa comets and Shubunkins can get much larger than 6 inches if given a clean and expansive environment. They will live an average of 20 years.

Oldest Goldfish
The oldest goldfish was named Tish and owned by Hilda and Gordon Hand of Carlton Minniot, near Thirsk, North Yorkshire, UK. It lived for 43 years after being won at a fairground stall in 1956. Hilda and Gordon buried their beloved Tish in a shady corner of their garden, as the fish had disliked direct light

we have goldfish and by accident petco sold us what we thougt were goldfish turned out to be koi! we even had babies as long as you have a filer and dont put to many fish in the same tank togther they can live 20 years mine are working on 4. we change their water about 50 percent use a gravel siphon and the chemical at petco and the right food pellets.since they are bigger now the flakes are good if they are younger and smaller but they do need a variety we feed them a frozen pea every now and then thats what the books say to feed as we feed shrimp and sometimes pellets we dont have a heater they do fine without one the best thing change filter and water they produce at lot of amonia!! dont buy a fish at wallmart we have had no luck petco is where we buy them 22 cents and up.gravel is important it has chemicals to help cycle the water

Wow, I can't believe that a gold fish lived that long. They usually die on the way home from the pet store. I guess since it killed all the other fish that it was too mean to die!

The ones I've owned it's been like 12 minutes. Consider yourself blessed to have had the little fella so long.

About 3 swirls around the toilet bowl. If lucky you may see a half gainer right before the end.
