There is a lot of info on the internet and in books, but I'd like first-hand advice on what you found most important, most helpful, key steps in bringing your shelter dog home....: (I am planning on getting a puppy, somewhere between 3-12 months old).

- how did you make their first night (s) and days comfortable?
- how soon should I take the pup to the vet for his first visit?
- what age is appropriate for taking a pup for walks on a leash?
- what "signs" should I look for in the dogs when choosing - for example, ways to recognize aggression issues or socialization problems
- What were the "essentials" you were glad you had bought ahead of time?
- How long did it take your dog to start acting happy and comfortable in its new home?

There are 3 adults, one in college but here for the summers, and I'm 13...we have 2 cats, one that doesn't like change too much, and the other one doesn't really care. We need a breed that should be well mannered and all that kind of stuff...so what do you think?

My puppy had a broken tail when I got him. I think it was already healed crooked now, and it doesn't seem to bother him. Should I take him to the vet anyway?

My husband fell in love with a Rottweiller puppy at a pet store and he had what the vet called swimmers, he couldn't stand on his back legs. They told us we would have to make him swim in the bathtub several times a day and keep him on a calcium supplement. Well we have had him for about 7 months now and love him very much. He walks on all 4 legs and runs kind of funny. Sometimes he limps around but seems to not be in pain. I really don't think the vet is all that great and I'm not familiar with any others around here. I would like to know if anyone else has ever heard of this and what you do to treat it.

There are soooooooooo many people that get big dogs just to have them sit in the back yard all day, PLEASE HELP ME TO UNDERSTAND!! Cause it just makes me soooooo mad!
I think that you should always take time to walk or play with your dog. People make me feel like I'm the crazy one, they will say "there just dogs". People still don't get that dogs have feelings!!!
