I don't want a "toy" or herding dog like a poodle, but I want a dog that can guard OK. I don't want a sporting dog. I want a dog that only needs about 30 min. excersize every day.

the truth is that all dogs shed..... there are some breeds that shed less than others as a rule of thumb breeds like poodles and beachon fise do shed less than others. through breed research you can find the right breed for your situation. to do breed research you can look ing books for the various breeds and when you find one your interested in get a book on that specific breed. Many breeders and owner think that their breed does not shed. this is not totally true, but is a selling point used to make sale for the breeders of the breed. I would suggest that you look into proper hair care and/ or shorter haired breeds if hair shedding is a consern for you. discuss the fine points with a veterinarian, groomer, shelter workers. and read both internet sites on animal care and books. this will help you make the most informed decision on which breed out of the more than 1000 breeds recognized world wide (including the new designer breeds).

As far as the 2' feet tall most breeds withthis height are considered large dogs. A general rule If you are looking for a medium sized dog you are looking for one whose breed profile states a height of under 20 in. for large breeds the heights start around 18 inches and go up to around 26 then the giant breeds are 27 and up. toy breeds are up to 15 inches and the tiniest breeds are around 10 inches.

Standard Xoloitzcuintli. Does need lots of shade in the summer, and must be inside during cold weather, but they are mid-sized, and they do not shed. Reispinscher is only partly right, I know of at least three breeds that do not shed, the other two are American Hairless Terriers and Chinese Cresteds.

Poodle or any poodle mix. My dog is about two feet tall and he's a schnoodle (schnauser and poodle).

Maltese^^ I have one, and they're great. They don't shed at all either. But the grooming needs are a bit strict.
