There are soooooooooo many people that get big dogs just to have them sit in the back yard all day, PLEASE HELP ME TO UNDERSTAND!! Cause it just makes me soooooo mad!
I think that you should always take time to walk or play with your dog. People make me feel like I'm the crazy one, they will say "there just dogs". People still don't get that dogs have feelings!!!

I know how you feel. I work in a shelter and we get in more big dogs than anything...The ones that comes from homes are usualy under socialized, needy, and in need of vet care. They often have *issues* just because of being ignored all of their lives.
It seems by the time we make a break through with some of them the shelter gets Slammed full and we have to put the poor things down. Its sad.

I agree. it's just crazy to tie up a dog and let it set there by the
hours with nothing to do. Dogs are our friends, companions, and will always love you no matter how they're treated, its a shame to allow mistreatment of a pet.
very frustrating . . but it is their choice, so look the other way, and allow yourself to be less sympathetic, because what can you do about it? Call the police, or the humane society, but by yourself
you just have to let it go. The idea that the dog is out back chained give some people security.
He does alert roamers that a dog is watching so "stay away"

A lot of people see dogs as a status item, like something they should just have. My wife works at a shelter, and that sort of ownership makes both of us sick. While some dogs do like to lay in the sun, if that is ALL they get to do, it is not good for the dog or the owner. Dogs are social animals that need interaction and affection.

If you want a pet that will ignore you, buy a cat. They are much more independent. (That's a joke, cat's need love too.)

People go to shelters & get puppies, when the puppy turns out to be too big, they dump them. I have been working with abandoned & abused animals for 30 plus years. Most of those have been big dogs. Now I have 5 big dogs. An alaskan malamute, a flat-coated retriever, a chow & a border collie mix. I deal with big dogs the most cause people don't seem to want them. Most people want small lap dogs. Personally, I like the bigger dogs better. And mine stay indoors when they want to. I believe in order for a dog of any size to feel like it is part of the family it has to be with the family, not tied out in the backyard.

I just came back from dog adoption or rescue center, and I seen 6 big dogs waiting for new homes..sad to see..most of the dogs are large dogs,,seemed they are only good when they are small and cute and when they get big.. they won't be in good hands of their owner. Yes, that is why we should get dogs in our choice and the ones that adapt our lifestyles not because it is better to raise big dog because they don't need lots of care and commitment just like raising a child...Once I had almost hit a dog on the road because of the careless owner that lets the dog run around the streets..
I know how you feel, and for the ones that see them get abandoned or not care even it was on the road and there are many cars around or might bite someone..
not all people like dogs because they bites even their own owner but a good education on how to raise one is one thing that people should considered.
and appreciate those big dogs owners that care not only about their big dogs but the safety of the people around..

My black lab was my best buddy.. he went EVERYWHERE with me.. loved to go for rides in the truck.. hang is slobbering head out the window.. I created a doggy bed on the back of my 4-wheeler for him to be comfy in.. brought him to the local park/lake every weekend (crazy mutt went underwater chasing rocks and fish) .. He always got soft serve ice cream on our way home from the park in the summer.. had an occasional plain fast food burger.. fenced in back yard.. so he would have the freedom to run wild at home.. was a natural squirrel and rabbit terrorizer.. and lived for chasing tennis balls..
He died of toxic shock from a really bad ear infection last year (swamp water chasing geese) the vet couldn't find the right medication to save him. I miss that pup..
I have a great dane now.. I like dogs I don't have to bend over to pet.. Danes are huge, but naturally laid back if not totally lazy couch potatoes.. He also loves the park and ice cream.. I treat dogs like the family I consider them to be..
And that is how it should be.. It is a balance, you must give what you get .. people that get dogs and don't take the time to be nice to them or give them a good home, are pathetic..
I have a big problem with people getting them as christmas presents.. Have you ever seen one that worked out well?
I get my dogs from rescue shelters, they are always very appreciative of there new life where they are treated with respect and dignity. They do have feelings. And people should be more appreciative of what dogs have to offer instead of being selfish and using pups as an occasional playtoy for whan they are bored with their life.

Well, my dog sits in the yard while I sit at a desk in an office with no windows. If you ask me, I would rather be the dog.

Then, when I get home, we all spend time together. Kids, dogs, and parents (me being a parent)

And to prove my point even more, my dogs are all foster dogs who have been rescued from high kill shelters. So, if they weren't hanging out in my yard with toys, food, water, and friends, they would all be dead right now.

Which would you prefer?

I agree!..
I used to feel so sorry for a lovely German shepherd that was short- chained to his dog house. he was there in all weather, whether blistering sun, or thunder or rain storms.
I finally called the animal control, and they checked on him... They told me that he had a dog house, food and water, so was considered to be un-neglected.
I finally began driving the long way around, because it broke my heart to drive past his home.
he looked so forlorn... it still haunts me... he never had a day to play, or interact with a family....just stand there 24/7 and suffer.
Not even any shade! Just dirt.

I own an English Mastiff, Cavalier King Charles, and Shih-Tzu. The truth is... My Mastiff(Massie) is very laid back, only goes for walks when I drag him out of the yard!
The others though, they are jumping and barking all day long! She is as happy as can be! Eats and sleeps, she's very protective of us (especially my kids) and she just loves riding in the back seat of our pick up truck adn sticking her head out when we park somewhere.
They are harmless, a bit on the lazy side, and a lot of fun! If you tie them up though, that's just WRONG!!!

I totally understand you Question/concern. If they get a pet they have that pet for life not a few days of weeks. I also dont understand why you make that huge commitment and then get angery with them when they destroy something when you are at fault for not taking them on walks or interacting with them.
