Cats - October 2006

I am new to cats. I'm allergic, and so need some advice. I really want to get a kitten but don't really know a lot about taking care of them. I know about dogs, but not cats, and I can't find any good websites. So...

1. Do you have any good websites where I can get information about raising a kitten?
2. How can I deal with my cat allergy (without getting an exotic cat)?
3. What should I look for when I go to pick out a kitten (at our local shelter)?
4. What kind of care will a kitten need?
5. What kind of toys, etc, will a kitten need?
6. How do I introduce a kitten to a home with (friendly) dogs?
7. What games to cats enjoy playing?
8. Should I get one or two?
9. Any other advice you might have!

Thanks!

Issue 1: I adopted a kitten over a month ago. The cat still seems to be afraid of our home. I kept it in a room for about 3 weeks then occasionally left the door open more frequently over the days after. Later, I moved the food bowl towards the door, then outside the door. The cat doesn't mind me picking him or approaching him in the room but when I do approach it if it's in the living room, it runs away. When I pick it up and bring it to the couch, it seems fine - until it decides to jump of the couch and become "afraid" again.

How do I appoach him gently and without him running away? I;ve kept many cats/kittens in the past but none was ever this scared!

Issue 2: It is 8 months old, is it usual for it to sleep most of the day and be active very little? It seems a tad bit lazy!

My cat is now 5 years old, and we adopted her from Hawaii Humaine Society...when she was just a kitten and they said they found her abandoned in a forest. So I was doing some reading that kitten's learn to purr when their babies because when drinking milk the kitten and mom can't meow during that time so they developed this "language" of purring. So like I said my kitty doesn't purr and could this be because since she was abandoned she maybe never drank milk from her mom and never learned or needed to purr?

Did someone open the door to a mental institution or something? All of these sickos on here.
What do you think should be done with all of them, and what do you think should happen to people who maim or torture cats(and other animals)?

I am interested to buy Revolution for my 3 year old cat, Chipmunk to gain more control of Fleas and ear mites. I am interested if anyone can recommend me to buy Revolution on-line in Canada because i don't want to pay any customs duties fees from the border if i order anything from the USA. My Vet wants me to pay over 130 dollars just for him to take a look at my cat and admistrate the Revolution on him which i find it outrage.

Thanks in Advance

We have 2 cats--both are indoor only (they're 2 1/2 years old & littermates). The male cat has started sneezing a lot lately and I have no idea why. He also seems to cough, almost daily, but I'm not sure if he is coughing up hairballs or this is a symptom of something else ( no hair comes up when he does this).
The sneezing has been going on for at least a month or 2. And the coughing has been going on since we adopted him at 6 months old from a rescue organization--although it is a lot more frequent now. I gave it time to see if this was something that would pass (the sneezing), but it hasn't. I just assumed that he was coughing up hairballs, but now I am worried about that, too.
Our female cat doesn't have any of these symptoms at all. They both share the same litter box and food & water dish.... So if it were a cold or something, I would assume that the female cat would have caught it by now.

So our kitty is about 15 months old, a Lynx Point Siamese. We were away for a couple of weeks and had friends catsit him and our other kitty. When we came home, he had gotten a little heavier than normal because we'd asked them to keep him inside. (He's normally outside for about 8 hours a day)

Then when we started letting him out again, he started losing weight. He went back to his normal weight, but we've noticed in the last week or so that he seems rather skinny, sometimes within a few hours he appears to go from normal slender, to rather skinny. Yet when we weigh him, there's no perceivable change in weight (our scales measures down to a tenth of a pound).

So we took him to the vet to see if he wasn't too skinny. The vet said he had a fever (Temp 103), and that there'd been some change in the back of his eyes (didn't say what, but asked if his night vision was bad, which it's not at all). He feared that our kitty could have FIP, so we're having a blood test done.

Okay, I have an eight month old kitten named Alex, he's all white, so any fleas I am able to spot right away. I give him bathes with the flea and tick shampoo for kittens and cats, then I spray everything down that he sits on, cuddles on, or just rubs againist with the flea stuff. I even put that advantage for cats/kittens on him. But none of that is working! I give his sister, sophie, a bath a repeat everything with her. I even give the dog a bath and put stuff on him. But nothing is working! Everytime I look, Alex always seems to have a ton of fleas. Heck I even brush him down with the flea comb, I do that to his sister, and the dog! But nothing seems to work! Do you have any idea of how to get rid of these stupid fleas! I want to be able to pick him up without having to worry about fleas jumping on me! And by the way, both cats are indoor cats, they never leave the house.

We have a new kitten that has adopted us and our dog of 2 years seems to be ok with it except that she tries to nudge it with her nose and step on it like she wants to hold it down. Why does she do this?

My cats have fleas and I have tried so hard to get rid of them. I have given them bathes, bought them collars but nothing is helping. I love them so much and it is hard to see them getting all bitten up. Is there anything you can put on the carpet to kill them? Should I just get a bug bomb and set it off in my apartment?

Please don't tell me not to do it. I haven't decided yet. I just want to know if they are too old. They are 2 and 3 years old. Is this too old to get just the front claws done? What alternatives are there? I tried those little things you glue onto the claw. They work fine for 2-3 days, but then they either fall off or are chewed off. Any other ideas? Oh, and they have a scratching post and use it. And we spray them if they use the couch, but they think they are dogs and just laugh at me when I spray them. The main concern is my 8 month old daughter. She is very gentle with them, but sometimes she sneaks over to them and she has had several scratches on her from them. Help! Thanks.

My cat is just having her kittens, but I don't see movement in her belly? Could this mean kittens are death?
Could this mean that they have died during her pregnancy?

Yes, she's having them right now!

our cats & house. Today my son called & said his sister Chris had to take our kitten, Furball to the vet. They felt she looked sick, so I gave her the ok. Well Furball was sicker than they thought, She just died. Why do I feel like I just lost one of my kids, or my best friend? I can't stop crying, I really didn't want another kitten, but my husband thought one of our grandchildren wanted her. She didn't want the responsibilty (She's only 7) so he brought Furball home. Has anyone else felt this way when they have lost a pet especially one they really didn't want
