My cat is now 5 years old, and we adopted her from Hawaii Humaine Society...when she was just a kitten and they said they found her abandoned in a forest. So I was doing some reading that kitten's learn to purr when their babies because when drinking milk the kitten and mom can't meow during that time so they developed this "language" of purring. So like I said my kitty doesn't purr and could this be because since she was abandoned she maybe never drank milk from her mom and never learned or needed to purr?

My cat does not purr either! The only time she has ever purred was when she was seperated from my other cat for a few days and was having anxiety problems from that.(the two cats are VERY attached to each other) She became VERY clingy and would purr while demanding attention all night long, which was very unusual for her. Once she was reunited with the other cat, she stopped again. She is still affectionate and likes to be petted and scratched and all that, she just DOES NOT purr! So don't worry, sometimes it just happens.

I had a cat once who did not purr a normal cat purr - instead, he made a kind of hum-cluck noise deep in his throat and chest. I wondered about this until I realized that it was almost the same sounds i make when i pick him up, haul him over my shoulder and pat him from the time he was kitten. So, perhaps cats do learn their purring "style" from their primary mom-figure.
I loved that cat to distraction and when he died, it felt like i lost my own child.

I have a cat who does not purr either. She was born in barn full of feral cats and the mom would not take care of the kittens. The owner of the barn ended up bottle feeding the kittens so as far as I know she never nearsed from her mom either. She is a happy cat, and loves attention. She just never purrs

Cats purr when you bring them friendliness and contentment like hugging and fonding. Purring is natural for all cats, not through nurture.
Well, just because you can't hear it purr doesn't mean that it doesn't know how to purr.
Next time try hugging it and then try to touch its throat. You can sense some vibrations because it is purring!

Very possible. Your cat also could be purring so low that you just cant hear it. Next time she is really content try putting your finger on her neck to see if you can feel her purr.
