Your in limbo... She won't get depressed!!! But the more you take her out. The more she will want to go out. Try to schedule a specific time for her to go out. So she will know when she gets to go out. Other than that it will be hard to stop the whining. My cat switched to whining for water from the tap. He does it in the middle of the night! I try to distract him with a toy... He learned to play fetch. ♥ Good Luck!!!! ♥

Sounds like your cat has you pretty well-trained. She whines, and you take her out. Therefore, the next time she wants to go out, she will whine again. If you don't want her to whine, show her that you will not take her out in response to her whining. Ever. (If you do it once in a while, then she will keep whining because it sometimes works.) It's the same basic principle behind Pavlov's dogs.
There's nothing wrong with taking her outside of you want to do so. Some people stake their cats outside on a tether. Perhaps you could establish a routine of taking her out for a certain amount of time each day.

Is she whining because she wants to go out or is she in heat? You will know. A cat in heat is very vocal, calling and calling for a male cat. She will roll and roll on the ground and constantly rub against furniture or your leg. She will assume a breeding posture with her head and front legs near the ground and the rump area held high. She will become very affectionate. You may notice her urinating frequently. She will be in heat and accept a male for 3 to 16 days.

This is part of the reason I've never allowed my cats to go outdoors, they want to be out all the time and that is not safe or healthy for them. Word of the wise, wean her off of this habit or get one of those special outdoor walks that are screened in and only allow her to stay in that area when she's outdoors.
Check out a couple of these screened in catwalks at Doctors Foster and Smith website: http://www.drsfostersmith.com/Product/Prod_Display.cfm?pcatid=7336&N=2002+113873
These can be attatched to a pet door so kitty can go out safely when she wants to. Good luck!

my cat has never been outside and so she does not whine at all....i would not take her out....and she does look out the patio doors but she does not try to get out of the apartment...you may of just got her interested in the outside and maybe you need to break her and then maybe she will forget about the outside...you could get a pet door but it might not be safe for her to be outside alone though....

She loves going outside. To do so, she whines and you take her out.

At five months old, she could be going into heat.
Get her spayed which may help her desire to go outside. You created this problem by taking her outside, be creative and resolve the problem.

I choose not to take my cats out because they can pick up fleas, ear mites, ticks, lyme disease ect..., from their surroundings. I would stop taking her out at all and she will become adjusted and stop whining.
