So here's the deal. My girlfriend and I live with her parents in a seperate buidling from their house. Our dogs are 2 years old and 1 year old. They've never slept outside before untill last night. Her parents think that the dogs have some type of skin mites or something like that. Even though I don't I'm about to leave to take them to the vet and I will check this when I get back. Help us think of a good lie to tell her for us to be able to keep them inside again. The only thing I could think of was something like telling her that the vet said that if they have been house dogs lately then they don't need to be outside because their hair is adjusting to the cold or they need to be kept as clean as possible or something last night. I mean ... It was 21 degrees F last night. Help us think of a lie that sounds good with smart technical terms like a doctor / vet would say. Thanks all!

I'm thinking of getting a dog and totally fell in love with some silky terriers that a breeder I know just got. What kind of pet are they? Are they yappy? Do they tear up everything? Are they quiet and docile or totally cranky and a pain in the butt?

OK, I admit I am instinctively against the idea of ear cropping, (so this IS part rant - lol) but have to admit also that I know very little about it.

Why do it? Why are some breeds cropped? Ear cropping has far more to do with surgery than breeding, surely - so that argument doesn't seem to hold water.

Is there any benefit to doing this?

I can't help but see it as unnecessary surgery at best.

Unless you know different. Can anyone enlighten me?

i have a 3 month old yorkie and she is a cutie, the problem is everytime i see her doing something out of the ordinary i start thinking negative. Like the other day she was running around the house playing with her toys and in like 5 seconds she just starting walking funny. i thought that she had broke a leg or something, but after a little rest she got up and started playing again.

I have a 3 year old Beagle/German Sheperd/Lab mix. He is in general a great dog, fairly obedient. He's also quiet for a hound. However, that hound nose gets him in trouble. He will follow any scent, usually getting sidetracked by another scent, and so on. I cant let him out unless he is on a leash or in his pen (he has a 30 by 15 or so fenced in area to run around in). I was thinking of getting one of those invisible fences that shocks the dog when they go past it. Any one who has used them...advice? Im mostly worried he is going to hit that shock point and just keep going...

We have a huge yard and another dog, who stays. I just want to be able to play catch with mine, or have him run around free. It disheartens me to see him sad.

Before answering, please note:

1. I am not asking whether or not it is cruel. I don't expect I'd get any agreement if I did.

2. I have no intention of having my dog's tail removed.

3. It's just a request for information to satisfy my curiosity.

Now that's out of the way, here's my understanding of the issue so far:

Some working breeds have their tails docked to avoid injuring them on brambles etc. Some dogs used for guarding have their tails docked so as to look more intimidating and not to give intruders anything to grab hold of.

I've heard some people argue that it is the "breed standard" but I can't understand that. Surely docking has nothing to do with breeding!

If the dogs are bred to be companion animals, why dock? Why are some breeds "meant" to be docked?

I have just got my first kitten- a persian colorpoint (absolutely beautiful). She is already spoilt rotten by us cuddling her at every opportunity. She doesn't seem to know her name though and doesn't come when she is called. Is she just spoilt? Is there anything I can do to make her more responsive? (She isn't deaf cos she can hear loud noises!) Or is it just that she doesn't like her name- Sushi?!

I just ordered the King Cat 16 blade Stripper (yes, that's really the name of it...) to brush my cat with... anybody ever use this? She is longhaired and sheds like mad! It hasn't arrived yet, but I'd like feedback from people who have tried it, or something like it. Thanks!

There is somone killing dogs on my street and 2 dogs have been killed in the past 3 months and one of the killings was just last wed. I am worried about my dogs becouse they have accsess to the backyard all day and I don't get home till 4:00 and they can't stay in the house while i'm gone becouse they will reck the house. When it is cold out I put them in our worm gorage but I have a dog door going to the outside I really don't want to come home to 2 dead dogs! So some advce would be nice!

I have a 2yr old staff she gets walked twice a day, has many toys and my 5yr old to terrerise and she still wants to chase her tail. (and no she hasn't got fleas) When i have guests round she's worse and i have to keep on shouting for her to stop. Any ideas on how to get her to seat on it!

My dog tends to pull a lot on walks, so we got him a halti and it helps immensely. The only problem is, he still goes nuts when people walk by the other way. He tries to jump up on them, and sometimes growls or barks at them. I know he won't actually hurt them, but it does understandably scare people, he's a big dog. I can't control him very well when he does this because he's so strong. How can I prevent him from doing this?

We obtained this 4/5 year old female a little more than a month ago. She had been living in a puppy mill. She blended in with our other dogs, all cocker spaniels, very quicly. In the past three days she has stopped eating, anything other than treats. She is still extremely active-running and jumping all over the place. She just does not want to eat.

She is wanting to spend all of her time grazing in the back yard. The temp has dropped more than 40 degrees and all she wants to do is stay in the back yard. Her fuid intake is wonderful.

When we first got her, there was a rumor she mught be pregnant. I have had puppies with my cocker spaniels and I don't see her with any of the normal cocker spaniel signs that puppies are on the way. Could she be ready to have puppies?

I don't need a lecture. I need advice. I know she is better off with me than at a flea market, where she was scheduled to be given away.

My cat, Lily, is what I would call, uh, "Tons of fun"... she's large and in charge if you get what I'm saying. The past few days she has discovered that it's nice and warm on top of the computer monitor. How can I keep her off of it? It's driving me crazy.

I can't spray water on her when she's on the monitor... so that option is out.

she said that she was allergic to cats and the cats kept coming over to her property (outside with every other alergen in the world). i told her what i thought. one person answered that she should give the cats antifreeze. what do you think of the person who answered like that? that was not my answer.
