In the Caribbean countries, the houses are made of cement blocks only to withstand years of use. Here in the US the houses and residential buildings in New York City use bricks and wood. Which one is stronger and if cement is stronger why would the US use bricks and wood instead of cement blocks.

The valve is underneath the tank. To close the valve it screws clockwise and lengthens. To drain, I screw counter clock wise and it shortens into the tank. I am unable to remove the screw. Wondering if there is a gasket on the screw inside the tank that is worn that is unfixable. I tighten the screw as much as I can and this doesn't work. Is this fixable and how much do you think it will cost?

I accidentally touched a broken bulb with pliers and it sparked. Dumb, I know. I have reset the breaker (it was't blown anyway), as well as the GFCI on that outlet. Yet all lights are still out. The bulbs still work because I switched one to see. These are outdoor lights. Both sides of the outlet still work.

They were built by a cabinetmaker before we moved into my condominium. I have tried and tried to get the HOA to pay but to no avail. We are getting ready to sell and cant afford to replace the drawers. Only the bottoms are warped is there anyway to fix this?
The drawer bottoms are glued into the drawers, they are not the slide out kind.

When we bought our old home, our home inspector said that we needed a new roof. It has two layers of shingles nailed into cedar wood (not cedar shingles). He said they used to use cedar in the old days, but no roofer would reuse the cedar. So the whole roof repair would be a tear off of the shingles and wood beneath.

We have a good contractor, but I'm not sure I understand his estimate and whether he understands that there is cedar that needs to be removed (a complete tear off) - although we told him that.

Here's his estimate below - what does this mean in layman's terms?

"Remove all existing roofing to lath, repair lath if needed and install 7/16" OSB sheathing, #15 roofing felt and 30 year dimensional asphalt shingles with rollvent ridgevent. Includes cleanup and disposal of debris.

It also says "Lath repair will be billed extra." That's what makes me wonder - what is "lath"? That's not the cedar that needs to be removed is it? The cedar is the sheathing?

The exaust pipe is a straight shot venting to the outside... can it be insulated, would that help? Looking from the outside, it is just a PVC pipe with no cover, just a grate.

I've removed all the old sealant. There is a gap in both corners. It's about 1/3 to 1/2 inch wide at the bottom between the top of the tub and the shower wall corner. I can stick my finger into it an inch or so - there is damaged wall-board back there. The gap is about 2 inches tall, but then narrows to nothing.

I know it sounds kind of bad - this whole bathroom needs to be re-done. But for time being - what is the best way to fill and seal this large gap. Just squirt tons of silicone into it? Or is there something else I could use?

i put 10 gal of fuel in today, my furnance started to run. it ran for about 30 min, i set the termastats to 80, just so it could run out and burn up the dust and stuff, then it shut off and won't come back on. the auto shut off is still in the on position, which means i don't have to bleed the line, but i re turned up the stats and still nothing, i checked the breaker and it's fine, i am at a loss on what to do next, can anyone help me?
