It depends on whether by doing so you block the flow of air over the condenser coils on the back or bottom of the unit. If the refrigerator is in its own 'alcove' or, in other words, close to walls on all sides and top, it is important NOT to block the air flow. If the unit is free-standing and has plenty of air circulation it shouldn't be a problem. Just be sure that what you put on top doesn't get pushed to the back and fall on the coils.

I'm in be Tween on this issue. (Oh that was bad wasn't it!)
The cooler the air is that goes to the condenser, the more efficient the refrigerator will be.
If you put the refrigerator in the center of the room with nothing around it you should theoreticaly pick up a bit of efficiency.
Likewise, the degree that clutter on top of the refrigerator restricts air flow to the condenser, the higher the impact on the efficiency of the refrigerator.
There are comprimises in life. No one is going to move their refrigerator to the center of the room to gain a small degree of efficiency.
Likewise most people would weigh the small degree of inefficiency created by putting some stuff on top of the refrigerator and say that that very small extra cost is worth it to have additional shelve space.
