Okay, yeah, Bluebear's mostly right. Sometimes you'll hear the sewer (the tunnels and such under the streets) referred to as a septic sewer and a storm sewer. Septic just means it's handling waste water. Plumbing is all the piping in the house including that septic system and the gas lines (plumbing is what you call a plumber for).

So, sometimes you'll see people who have septic tanks - a tank buried in the yard somewhere as well as some connected piping to distribute water into a leach field around the tank. Sewer pipes from the house run out to that septic tank (and the sewer piping and the tank would all be termed the septic system for that house).

To you, the user, there is no difference except to follow a few simple steps.
1.) Remember to have the septic tank pumped out about every 3 years.
2.) Don't run the garbage disposal more than necessary. Mainly because you don't want to fill the septic tank with excess solids.
3.) Use low suds laundry soap.
4.) Don't go to extremes with anti bacterial cleaners because you want the septic tank to keep decomposing as much waste as possible.
Item one is the most critical to watch. I should also say that someplace in your yard there is (if it is up to current code) what is called a drain field. It will be under the ground a couple of feet and will cover an area of about 60 X 40 feet. You shouldn't be digging or planting trees in this area.

A plumbing system is all the inflow and outflow of water in a building. A septic system is the outflow of waste and waste water. In a septic system waste water flows in to a septic tank were the solids filter to the bottom to be broke down by bacteria. The liquids flow out into a leach field which is a set of porous pipes that let the water filter down and be purified by ground earth.
