Should I buy compost or mess around with it myself?

We are starting a veggie garden to feed our small family fresh natural vegetable. I'm not into being dirty and don't have much time to mess around with anything that needs regular care. My hubby will help with garden but he will not touch compost.

I see people abscessed with making own compost? Why wouldn't I just buy it? What are the benefits of self-made compost?

Our girl scout troop is about to work on a badge involving plants and I am clueless. I need something extremely simple because the idea is to send each girl home with her plant and have them track the growth every few days on a chart. Then she would bring her plant back to our next meeting in 2 weeks.

We were going to place lima beans and wet paper towels in a plastic baggie taped to a window, but then I read that you can't use lima beans from a bag in the store because they have been treated with something to prevent growth. So, now I am stumped! Is there anything else we can use (potatoe, other beans, etc) that is inexpensive and easy to use in place of the lima bean?

Any and all suggestions would be greatly appreciated!

I didn't really make much of an effort at my previous garden but I'm moving now and would like some ideas as to how to manage the new one. It's pretty long though I'm not sure of the length as I haven't had to chance to measure it yet but it's not very wide. I love looking at pics of garden in magz etc and they look so beautiful and I'd like to get some suggestions as to how I can get my garden to look pretty as well as chic so I can host some late evening parties in the summer evenings. (I'm so excited! lol) Also some suggestions on the plants I can plant that will look pretty and will flower by summer if I plant them now?

I am a disabled woman but gardening is my passion, I have not been able to get my hands in the dirt in a long time except for house plants and flower pots. Well I finaly got a mobility scooter. After 3 years being inside my house I can now go out side. I still can't stand or bend but I saw a picture of raised gardening, I think I can work in. How can I build one with VERY LITTLE MONEY. I've looked on internet and they all cost over $100.00. That would be all my grocery money. any ideas?????

I have gotten quotes on a Kubota, Massey Ferguson, and Mahindra. I am still unsure of them is going to give me the best results for my bucks. I have a little heavy lifting to clear some property and move some things around. But I want a good machine that will do the job. I can't afford to spend more than $15,000 as I am retired and on a fixed income. Does anyone know anything about tractors. I was told the Massey Ferguson was the best, some say the Kubota, than someone else told me to go and check out the Mahindra. Any ideas, please do not reply if you know nothing on the subject. I would certainly appreciate any serious answers.

I have 150' x 150' area on my backyard (behind the pool) that until recently was wooded. We left trees only on two edges and I wish to utilize the area for garden that will be nice looking but also partially eatable and fun for my 5-year old. We in zone 6. Lot is almost level and trees make it partial sun.
I wish to do it without breaking bank. Water feature would be nice to have.

Whether it's the light stuff, like weeding, or more involved activities like mowing or heavy pruning, do you prefer to do it yourself or pay a gardener to do it?

What is the best potting soil to use for indoor plants? Name brands or does it matter? What should the texture be like? The kind I bought was moist feeling and very heavy? Should I repot them soon with something else? Thanks for the input.

We live in So. Cal and during a cold spell our tree over night turned brown..just the leaves. There are couple of green leaves but mostly brown..they are now falling off. We assumed that the tree is dead and was going to remove it but the trunk still looks nice and healthy. How do we know if it's dead or not?
