I live in Illinois, zone 5, I think. I have never gardened before, but my naked house needs some plants or something! Could you please suggest hardy plants that grow well in this area, and require a minimum of care? If I later discover a knack for gardening, I'll commit more time and money to it. But I want to keep things as simple as possible for now.

I live in Tennessee and I was putting out pre-emergent the other day and I noticed quite a few thick bladed grasses. Maybe crabgrass has already come up?

What good will it do to still put out pre-emergent ? We are told by Scotts that we can safely put down pre-emergent all the way to April 1.

Here is a couple of pictures I took below:

Every spring I go throught the same ordeal, finding someone who has a hobbyist level of gardening knowledge and wants to work about twenty hours a week for $12 to 15 an hour. Usually I manage to get someone thru the summer months, but they start getting flakey on me around fall and I usually end up having to find a landscaping firm to get ready for Winter. Its a good job with flexible hours and a decent wage. I even guarantee 10 hours a week thru winter! Doesn't anyone want to work these days?

It's dirt now and will have to dig out for fill. What would be the best fill I could use? I've also heard of manpac or hardpac as an alterntive to asphalt. Any comments about either?

Also will it hurt the birds. The weed and feed says if you get it on your skin or clothing to remove clothing or wash skin immediatly, yet it has no mention of use on pet areas and I know this is a product that people use on thier entire yards. But I am a little unsure of using it where my dogs go out.

In Saudi Arabia it is called Japanese Grass. It is very short, does not require cutting, and is like lumpy velvet to walk on. Is known by another name as I cannot find growing maintenance instructions for it??

I quit trying to grow tomatoes a few years ago because, I can grow lovely, tall, healthy looking plants but, no tomatoes? Is there something I can do to grow great tasting tomatoes? I always planted them where they would have full sun all day. Can they grow and produce in shady areas?
