Yes they are.
As a novice, you will get a good crop if you grow the type that grow along the ground.
Do not try climbing types.
The type that grow along the ground are easy to grow, however they are shorter (about 20cm), but the same thickness as a supermarket cucumber.
Also their skins are a bit tougher (can have small spikes on the skin), but that doesn't matter, you can always peel them if the skin is too tough for your taste.
They are also fairly resistant to pests (including slugs), I suppose it's due to their tougher skin.
Ask for a seed packet at your local garden centre, and follow the instructions on the packet. They've never failed for me.

I have been growing them for years. Never did them in a container though.
I would recommend a container on the larger size. Fairly deep and rectangular would be best. Fill the bottom with some small stones and make sure there is drainage holes in the bottom. Fill the rest with a good quality potting soil.
You will need something for the plant to climb up. So either a cage that fits securely in the container or place it up against a fence.
Buy plants at a nursery. They are easier to do than starting from seed.
Keep the soil moist but be careful to not over water.
Good luck.

You can ...try to find some that are small or even the little gherkin variety .... I think it would be easier to grow them in long, rectangular window boxes ... just put them on the ground, fill them with your stuff, and plant away ....
There are a lot of 'baby' vegetables to grow .... cute little peppers, little round squashes..... those might be fun for you ...and those little tomatoes that even are kind enough these days to grow as little bushes rather than requiring staking up!!!!
Cheers!

Quite easy to grow. They are climbers, you'll want some sort of support. There are male and female plants so if you want cucumber vegies, you'll need to plant 3 to 5 seeds in order for the flowers to be pollinated. Think some seed companies differentiate male and female seed by coloring them. good luck

The further north you are the less sucessful you are likely to be with growing them outside. They really need to be grown in a greenhouse for the best results.
They need plenty of water if you are lucky enough to have a greenhouse. As a climber I attached a net to the side of my greenhouse and grew them up that. They are not difficult to grow if they are kept watered.

Try the burpless variety and pick them when about 4 ins long, he compost at the surface needs to be kept quiet dry to stop them from, they are best planted in a seed compose with added sharp sand or grit.
if you have any more questions please ask.

They do best in a greenhouse or cold frame but you can try outside. They take up lots of space though so beware!

they are really easy to grow... beware.. they like space and reach out for it.... in no time 1 plant will take over your yard... in like a matter of weeks... they like to climb and re-plant themselves all over
