Some butterflies contain chemicals that are toxic to many predators. For example, when a blue jay consumes a monarch butterfly, it vomits shortly after.
Pipevine Swallowtail is a distasteful butterfly due to the host plants it eats (Dutchman's Pipevine).
So if you eat a butterfly be sure it is not one of the distasteful species

Butterflies pollenate flowers. They lay their eggs on host plants, when the caterpillar hatches it eats the host plant, goes through the crysallis stage to emerge as a butterfly. Caterpillar stage is the only "harmful" stage of butterfly life.

The presence of butterflies in your yard speaks volumes on the general health of the environment around your home. They are not harmful.

No. They form part of the ecological balance in your garden. When you see butterflies in a garden, that's a healthy garden. When butterflies flit from flower to flower, your plant or garden benefits from it.

Before you see butterflies, caterpillars must be around your plants. And they are not harmful too.
