Are last years plants still alive? I've never pruned a tomato plant, all mine died during the winter months, and I just take them out and plant new ones. You are still good for a few more months to plant new ones.

Yank them out of the ground in the fall. Tomato plants are annuals-they don't come back. New ones may grow on their own if some seeds take root, however. Put new plants in the ground in Spring, after danger of frost is over. I usually try to get them in soon after they show up in the home centers.
