Earthquakes are a natural part of the Earth's ever changing topography, building mountain ranges, changing coastlines, moving entire continents. Many small quakes in an area tend to relieve plate stresses, while causing minimal damage for man....longer periods of no activity in fault zones often lead to bigger stresses on the earth's crust building up, and worse damage when they let loose.
For better or worse from man's point of view, quakes are an inevitable part of our living , evolving planet, and are a large part, at the center, of most all the geography we see on the face of our planet today.

It happens. There doesn't have to be a benefit. Some of the places where we are able to view the progress of the Earth's formation have been revealed by earthquakes, but that's not why they happen.
