water them at night/dusk
after the heat of the sun is gone
if you water early in the morning or afternoon the heat/sun will boil the droplets and kill your plants

The thing to do is test the ground for it's pH factor, you simply buy a tester kit, push the probe into the ground and wait the allotted time. Then check the results against the chart in the kit. This will tell you if your ground is too alkaline , or too acid. You then take the appropriate action required to adjust your soil so that it is as suitable as possible for the plants and vegetables that you wish to grow. Don't forget that different plants prefer different soil conditions. During the growing season just simply use plant feed such as fish blood and bone, or poultry manure etc to give the plants nutrients to take from the soil. You do not need to feed the plants every day just do it as recommended on the packet of feed, or on the packet that the plants came in. Good luck & enjoy the friuts of your labour.

Keep the weeds away, check for bugs regularly and get rid of any you find, give them fertilizer once a month or so, mulch around the plant regularly. Thin out any small or sickly looking plants.

It is real important to keep the weeds out and the soil loosened up around the plants.
