Do It Yourself (DIY) - June 2007

We've added two more rooms to our house and the main walls are standing, you can see the bricks itself. And I'd like to give it a sound insulation material, because I'm a drummer and I'd like to drum in my room :)
Do You know any suggestions, what kind of material would be the best to choose?
...and also, it shouldn't be too expensive! Maybe around $1000 for the whole room, or for the critical places. (the room is 22 square meters big)

I have an old house (80 or 90 years) and I want to redo the dining room. It has molding everywhere (floor, chair, crown, doors, etc.) the boards look and feel sturdy enough. I need to strip most of the paint on the molding and re-paper and paint the whole room.
I don't mind making this a huge project as far as labor as long as I keep the cost down.
Would it be a good idea to take the molding off the walls to strip and prime them and to make papering the walls easier?

Can you guys give me any other tips?

I live in an apartment and the only good breeze that comes in off the 3rd floor is when the balcony door is open. Problem is I have to screen door and the bugs get in. Ive seen advertised these instant screen doors? Has anyone used one and if so did you like it? Also theres these bug screens that are magnetic? Please! Let me know if these things worked for you :) thanks!

Basically, we need to install a plastic hatch so that repairmen can access the main A/C unit for our central air system. (This is an apartment building/condominium built by the world's most crooked developer and the A/C units are so badly installed that it's hard to even get repair guys to come to our building.) The plastic hatch is 14x14 inches, and is the kind that "pops" in. We know exactly where it needs to go, but the job is too small for a handyman to bother with and our super is too busy to help. What's the best tool for the job, and what should I look out for (in terms of accidentally cutting into, say, a water pipe or dangerous electrical conduit)? I feel like this is kind of a stupid question, but I don't have anybody else to ask and the A/C has been broken for over a year!

My condo is pre-wired for security monitoring (like ADT, brinks), but the service isn't actually included in the association fees (meaning I'd have to pay for it myself).

What else can I do with the system? I'd like to be able to get some level of security out of the system. Is there a free service I could use? Or can I buy something that would automatically do the 911 call if the alarm goes off?

I just had an important event and i have a bunch of papers (printer paper and loose-leaf paper) that i want to put in a scrap book. How do I put then in a scrap book without them gettting ruined in a couple of years? Should I laminate them? If I did, how would I put them in to the scrap book? Do you know of any good scrap books? I need to move a very heavy queen mattress and boxspring (across town--will have truck) in a couple weeks. I've seen matress carrying-slings sold for a lot of money, but I'd like to know how to fashion my own--and what materials to use. How do you cool yourself without out airconditioning? Don't give me any wize cracks like buy an airconditioning. Don't tell me to buy a A.A.C. and don't tell me to sleep in my basement. It's like a dunjeon down there. Mice, rats, moldy cat poop. It's all damp and gross.. I have an old house... anyway... help!! Thanks!
