I need to move a very heavy queen mattress and boxspring (across town--will have truck) in a couple weeks. I've seen matress carrying-slings sold for a lot of money, but I'd like to know how to fashion my own--and what materials to use. Please, any help for how to create "handles" and make my mattress-moving an easier ordeal would be appreciated. thanks!

Most of the "fore-arm lifts" are simply made out of a web-strap material... the same kind of stuff on tie downs, and seat belts.

A quick way to mock one up, would be to purchase a 4-pack of tie downs... run two around the the mattress crosswise, and another lengthwise, (down the center), and there you have it, instant side and end handles. The straps can also be used to secure a load in the truck or trailer, while transporting too, hehehe. You can do the same type of thing with rope, by the way. Its all in how you run your material around the mattress and secure it. Adding a strap between the cross straps (just to secure them to each other....) gives you another anchor point too, if you want to run a strap off the end of the mattress, leaving it with some space between it and the mattress.

I keep a supply of these tie down straps in every vehicle I own, and my toolboxes... theyre just too handy.

If youve seen those ads for the "fore-arm lift" then youve got a good idea of how to run your straps to be able to use them as handles. You might check with moving rental companies too... they may have some you can get with a truck or trailer rental.

I just did a quick search on the moving strap..... here is a link to one such product... and its not that expensive I will add, that using the forearm is easier than just grasping a strap with your hands -- http://www.buystraps.com/Default.asp?tcode=seo&source=booyah&GCID=C16796x001&KEYWORD=p%20i%20forearm%20forklift&bhcp=1

Good Luck on the move :)

I too have seen the adds. I was thinking of a web strapping used for small boat winches in the sporting goods at Wal Mart.
Our town has businesses that use heavy duty sewing machines and I'll bet ya if you already had your straps pre cut you could stand there and show them how to make the cross-over web and the loop handles for very little cost.

Price a bag of nylon rope at Wal-Mart. Feed the rope through short pieces of PVC pipe for "grips".

If you would invent a mattress bra, you would be rich. I get 10% of all proceeds for the initial idea - thanks!
