How Can I get scratches off my new wood dining room table with out stripping it and redoing the whole thing?

I have bought things that only stain where it was scratched, but they don't work very well. I need a putty maybe of some sort. Thanks in Advance!

Actually there really is a better way to go. If you have only slight scratches that are not seriously deep. You can use " Clear Polyeurathane"
Remember though, mix it very well before you use it.
When you apply it use a " Sponge Type Brush"
Use a very very thin coat only, in one even stroke. Allow this to dry totally - I'd wait three days to be certain but 24 hours is fine.
Once it is dry you can check it for being even with the surface around it. If it requires a second coat you may want to sand over the first coat with at least a 220 Grit sandpaper and remember use "Tac Cloth" to get all sanding dust off before applying the second coat - again Do Not Apply Thick Coats, it will mess up the end job.

When applying do not apply to the entire brush - Only To The Tip.
You should not have to apply a third coat, if so sand between coats only not on the final coat.
Sand only in one direction with the grain. Do not over sand, only once over should be plenty.

You need to buy a table for your dining room. You need one that fits your color scheme. You need to buy one that is on sale, you will get so much more table for so much less cash that it only makes sense, and besides, do you want to break the law, especiallly the law of nature? You will need the table to fill with mail and things. If you think you should avoid purchasing the table because you eat in front of the TV, then move your TV to the dining room. It is your patriotic duty to buy the table. Congress has invested a lot to buy your vote by creating the Economic Stimulus Tax Rebate. You would be selfish to keep it and not spend it on something to stimulate the economy, such as the table. The furniture sales person is counting on you to stimulate their personal economy. They haven't been selling that much lately, and you already know how much of manufacturing has been shifted overseas. And the children, those poor little children have had to cut back on their after-school snacks. Their mothers are being forced to skewer left-over Brussels Sprouts and freeze them as a cold treat. So this Memorial Day do your patriotic duty and spend your rebate on that beautiful dining room table, then invite some veterans over to share it with.

Old English has an oil furniture polish, that has a darker tint to it, it is meant specifically for covering small scratches, to blend them. There are also stain markers that you can buy, that you use just like a marking pen to fill in the scratch. These markers are found at any hardware store, or Walmart stores, they are made by Minwax.

If the scratch is so deep that you're considering putty try Elmer's Wood Putty. It's the best one that I've found. It will take a stain so you can finish it to match the rest of the piece.

I have tried all of the above for my scratches and each did a temporary job.......I have to sand down and start fresh......my children did a number on my walnut table. I love the look of dark wood, (no table cloths) so I want to start fresh when they are a bit older......for now I deal with it....

On the underside of the table, test with 00 steel wool and lemon oil at the same time. Then use on the top side.

Try rubbing a little lemon oil on it---you know,saturate a rag with it and rub in a circular manner-this works great for scratches.

theres actually these markers that they sell at home depot that have certain shades that will cover up the scratches

use a bit of toothpaste on a cloth and rub gently , then wipe clean with a damp cloth.
