Pour in 1 cup rock salt and 1 cup vinegar. Add 3 cups boiling water. Let sit for an hour, and then flush with cold water. This will dislodge anything trapped in the drain that could be causing the foul odor.

The stinky part usually comes from the overflow opening in a bathroom sink. As water drains it forces the gases up through that like a vent. Get a funnel and flush the vent with bleach. You can also pull the u shaped trap from under the sink and clean that good.

Yeah, sometimes old drains that are not used much dry out and the 'pea trap' is empty. then there is no seal between you and the sewer. I would pout 2 or 3 cups of bleach in it. Wait about 5 minutes, then follow up with maybe a 1/2 gal or clean water. Don't use any kind of deodorizer, it will eventually spoil and begin to stink.

If it is a seldom used floor drain, the trap has probably dried up and the smell is sewer gas coming into the home. You can pour water down into it and the seal will will stop the gas. You can, if you wish, pour a bleach and water solution into the drain and let it sit a while and then pour more water into the drain.

If it's one of those drains that are in the floor usually in basements or utility rooms just pout a bunch of plain old tap water down it. That should force the offending odor back in the right direction.
