What products and tools are used, where do I get them? And of course they must be compatable: water-based, oil-based, etc. And then what product works best as a top coat to protect it all?

I have been thinking about renting a carpet cleaning machine. I've seen them at the grocery store and the local hardware... but I'm wondering if maybe Home Depot or Lowe's would have a better price. Is there a certain cleaner you prefer? Are they easy to use? How long do you let the carpet dry for before you move your furniture back? Thank you much.

I'm all set now, the underlay is down, do I lay the laminate along the floorboards or going across the floorboards? Some of the floorboards aren't quite level, only about 2mm out, but does this make a difference as to which way I lay it?
Thanks = )
