What products and tools are used, where do I get them? And of course they must be compatable: water-based, oil-based, etc. And then what product works best as a top coat to protect it all?

You can make your own water based glaze with acyrilic or latex paint, Floetrol and water. Use a third of each. It can be ragged, brushed, sponged, or rolled over another water based product. Then seal with a good non-yellowing polyurethane, either spray or brush application. If you want an oil based product, you have to purchase that at the home improvement store. But, I have found as long as you sand down or use liquid sand to etch the surface of any existing finish on wood cabinets, the home made glaze and sealer work fine.

Stain changes the color of the wood and sometimes protects it from the elements if it is the right kind of stain. It helps it age better if applied correctly. Glaze makes the wood shiny, protect it from dulling, and allows the natural color and beauty of the wood to show without letting the air dry and age it. With expensive wood that is full of natural character I would glaze. Staining is best to manipulate the colors of naturaly light or plain wood, like Pine. Even After staining I would glaze even good old pine if it was used for furniture. Anyone who stains cherry fromits original color for any reason should be shot in the face. It's international law.

The best way to add a glazed finish is to use automotive spray paint (CLEAR) through a hired compressor and spray gun. It looks AWESOME though you will need to be patient and spray about 4-6 coats for a deep lustre finish. This product is also nearly 100% stain free so it only needs a wipe over with a wet smooth cloth to remove dirt.

Most hardware stores carry a product called DEFT. This is a clear coating for woodworking projects. DEFT can be apply by brush, rag, spray, etc.

I would suggest that you go to your closest hardware store, such as Home Depot, Lowes or Ace Hardware, and find more information on DEFT.

Good Luck
