There are actual several chemical products designed to remove lacquer from wood, and they are available at most home improvement stores. Make sure you get a product designed to do the job you have in mind. These products are not terribly expensive. Sanding can be a time consuming business. Once you remove the bulk of the lacquer with a removal product, then you can sand to remove any last traces, and to help prepare the wood for being restained or painted.

You can buy Minwax Antique Finish Remover or similar products.
do not risk a chemical stripper coz it may raise the grain a bit

sands it or varnish remover and strip it. Directions are on the can.
