I was wondering if anyone had a link to a study done on the cost of heating a home versus the temperature set at when no one is home.

Basically I am wondering if it is more efficient to turn the heat way down (about 55 F) when I am not home and set the timer for just before I get home to re-heat the house. On the other hand, is it worth it since the heater has to work so much harder to bring the temp back up to 68, rather than bringing it back up from say 62.

I know everyone seems to have their own opinion on this, but I was hoping for some kind of at least pseudo-scientific study on this. I haven't been able to find one anywhere!

I have a Brand New Frigidaire Side-by-Side and the Ice Maker stopped making ice. The ice maker itself is basically a block of ice. What is the cause? How can I fix it?

First of all, my home sits on a concrete slab and I have one of those fiberglass bathtubs with the outerwall meeting the floor. A couple of weeks ago, I noticed water coming out from under my bathtub and thought that I figured out the problem was that the drainage was leaking. Yesterday, I decided to tackle the problem and had to open up the sheetrock wall on the other side of the tub. To my dismay, there was mold/ mildew on the sheetrock and an ant mold along the pipes. Also, under my bathtub there was not any concrete. From what I can tell, there was just sand on top of ground. IS THIS NORMAL!? I ran the water and could not see that the drainage was leaking so I'm back to square 1 and will probably have to open up the whole wall. Here are my many questions- Shouldn't there be concrete under my bathtub? Can there be possible mold/ mildew damage? Does my home warranty cover this? Could it get any worse?

We just checked our hut tub this morning after a few days of 0-teen degree weather. It seems to have frozen over the tub, we do not know if it is totally frozen as we can't see under. Is it saveable? Any clues on what we should do or is it too late?

I have a lot of trees in my yard, so there is a lot of shade. I have planted plants that can grow in the shade, but those that should flower rarely do. I have tried Miracle Gro. I'm afraid the soil is depleated of nutrients because of all of the trees - how do I fix it?

This way, I can run wire for a subpanel branch thru the same pipe used to feed the subpanel. The wiring from the main panel to the subpanel would be continuos and unspliced.

I have tried WD40 but tends to freeze up and still not let the door glide up with ease. Is there anything I can grease the tracks with? What good is a garage door opener if I have to get out to push the door up??

I see everybody doing it, but never thought it was safe as conections are not water tight between plugs and extensions.
But, they are low voltage. Anybody know of any fire danger or risk?

My furnace stopped working yesterday morning. After 2 service guys came, it seems to be worse! There is another one coming sometime this morning, but it could be later in the afternoon until the heat actually comes on. Its 3 degrees outside, and this morning the temperature was down to 55 degrees in the house. Should I be shutting my water off or anything? The last thing I need is bursting pipes...

Thanks!

I would like advice on getting a heater for my garage. It is large 23x 24 x 19 feet high. I just had a small loft built where I keep my tools and I want to heat it up a little when there. It is uninsultated. I do not want to spend a alot of money or run up high energy cost. Just some heat in a small area so I won't be quite so cold. Any advice?

i'm trying to think of inexpensive holiday gifts (low on funds this year) and i had an idea to give my family potted tulip bulbs for christmas. i thought it would be neat for them to keep and wait for the bulb to grow. but can you do this indoors? i've only heard of planting tulips in the garden. will they grow if the soil isn't frozen?

forgive my lack of knowledge on this... i am not a gardener!

I'm currently living in a student house with 5 other people, and we're due to get our first electricity bill through any day now, people have asked if i could pay more towards the bill as i have used the tumble dryer a few times, where as everyone else has only used it a couple of times- fair enough. But i was wondering if anyone knew roughly how much it costs to put a tumble dryer on for approx 80 mins, as i don't want them to try and fob most of the bill off on me and rip me off!

thank you!

The nob on my shower (in my recently rented house) is unusual. Turn it to the left for cold water, turn it to the right for hot water... There seems to be no good middle ground. I've tried placing it in every possible position and nothing gives me good warm water.
I removed the nob from the wall to see if I could fiddle with the connection to fix it, but I got nowhere that way. Is there a way I can fix this with little plumbing skills (the best I have done is replace a garbage disposal) or will it take a plumber coming in charging me gobs of money?

I live in the northeast, and was wondering how long it takes water pipes to freeze? We live in the house, but I'm concerned if the water pipes would freeze if we shut the heat completely off all day, until we come home (12-14 hours without heat), I assume that the house would stay warm (above 32 degrees) for at least a few hours (after we shut the heat off before work). I am not looking for answers stating the water freezes at 32 degrees. I'm wondering if the pipes would freeze/burst in a house that has no heat on for approximately 12 hours.
Thank You
