im downstairs and for awhile ive been hearing banging and footsteps upstairs , i heard metal thrown about too, what should i do , i might b oferreacting but im not sureif ishould go upstairs , i have a sharp knife and some air freasher next to me to help should i go upstairs

If you are in Texas you are free to use the knife to attack anyone trespassing on your property. But in other state that is illegal unless the criminal tries to attack you.
I would simply
A) take pictures of the criminal while shouting "help" then
B) run over to a neighbor's house
C) call the Police
with the pictures they'll have all the evidence they need
BTW, I did the same thing when I was held up at gunpoint (only I ran up to a neighbors and shouted help before I took pictures) and it worked beautifully the guy dropped his gun and my stolen laptop and ran like hell :-)
