Build a better mouse trap. Although buying one might be easier.
The trap at the link below is a different style than the normal snap trap. The bait goes underneath a plastic shroud. So they have to stick their nose in there to get the peanut butter...then SNAP! I bought some at Lowes or HD.

Seriously, some think this is animal cruelty? Get serious! Study history and learn how increased mice infestations led to a deadly plague that killed many people. It is more like self-defense than what has been suggested. They carry disease and even lice. Which do you prefer: kill mice to prevent disease and lice or get sick from them breeding and pooping in you home? Not to mention they can get into cabinets and leave droppings around food and dishes. This is unsanitary and can lead to serious illness. It is also not a good thing to let them roam around your home if you have children and pets. I have been experiencing trouble catching our little mouse visitor as well. I am trying different baits, but this little bugger is smart. Real advice on how to trap it with a snap trap would be appreciated. Thanks.

Put your trap right up next to a wall in a dark place. In the open mice can manuver around and all experts will agree against the wall is going to be best option.

Try with another type of trap - mice seem to get the knack of one kind of trap very quickly. We have 5 different types which we use in rotation to confuse those highly intelligent, but very annoying little creatures!

the snap kind didn't work for us. The sticky kind worked like a charm, we just put it on the floor against the wall in the kitchen & caught an embarrasing amount of 8! (We moved)

They now have sonic rodent repellers at canadian tire and probably home depot. plugs into electrical outlet and makes highpitched sound that rodents don't like so they move to the neighbour's house........and no little corpses left lying around.

Use the sticky traps so he will get stuck as soon as he gets on there.

Try baiting with a lump of chocolate - they need two 'hands' to lift it and disturb the mechanism more .... our ex-mice preferred white chocolate! :-)

with a pair of needle nose pliers you can adjust the trip mechanism so that you end up with a hair trigger...
