My apartment smells like raunchy cigarette smoke and I can't get rid of the smell. My clothes stink, all my possessions stink, and it is nasty. Candles, incense, febreeze air freshener hasn't helped. Anyone out there with any ideas? Also people, I smoke occasionally but I smoke outside and for this very reason. Don't smoke indoors. Its gross and nasty smelling for the next person who comes to live there.

Plastic bottled water is odious to me and absurdly bad for the environment. Possible options are buying Brita or Pur filters, or installing a water filter into my kitchen faucet. I am not very rich so I was thinking of using those conventional pitchers with filters. Another option is ordering Arrowhead and using a dispenser, but is that eco-friendly? I hear some sketchy stuff about "Spring Water" too. Any good/bad experiences with water filtration systems?

I want to know if there is a type of paint that can be painted over tile floors and that does not need to be re-painted often. Something durable...is it possible

I have a 20ft by 8ft space that will become divided into the living/dining space. This is a really long wall to decorate only with pictures. I am considering a crisp contemporary style wainscoting panel across it and then painting the top (wall part) a neutral color. The style will be classic contemporary with very clean lines. Is wainscoting a good idea here?

My cabinets are maple, but the outer "shells" are, I think, "fake" wood. They are stained with a light coat of polyurethane. They are in considerably good shape except around the door handles is grime from our hands opening the doors. (NO Cabinet pulls, a finger grip) I would like to do this as a do-it-yourselfer. What is the cheapest, but best way to paint the cabinets? I want it to look like I bought new cabinets with no paint brush strokes or speckles, etc. etc.

Thanks!!!

I have a large master bath that needs mirrors on all three walls. I found a large framed mirror that I really like that will fit well on the two large walls. I'd like to purchase another, though, and have it resized to fit the remaining small wall. I'm wondering if it is possible to pay to have someone recut the mirror and frame to the size needed. The height is fine; I just need the length changed.

I've got a fair amount of dust that was produced while cutting some aerated cement (breeze) blocks, and I was wondering if I can treat it like fresh cement and use it to make mortar?
(otherwise I'll have to go out and buy another bag even though I only need a bit more!!)

I live in a rental building and they have the ugliest bathroom tiles. I believe they are an actual tile. Anyways I know you can buy cheap linoleum tiles that are peel and stick. I would like to put the peel and stick tiles over the old tile. We are probably leaving in 9 months. How would I remove these tiles without hurting the previous tile and removing all the glue? Thanks. Also if anyone knows the rental rules - do I need to remove the new tiles that I put down?

I have an oak tree growing in my garden. It is still very young and at the moment stands about 4 feet tall. The problem I have is that the leaves at the top of the tree are turning a powdery white colour and are beginning to die. What is this, and how can I treat it? My son planted an acorn in a tub and the tree has grown from there so I really don't want to lose it.

If you have a family (mom and son12) , family (2 married adutls and 3 kids) and (2young adults - engaged) . How do you divide your living space ? Do you offer one room per family ? This is kind of weird to me because mom and son will be sleeping in same bed ? I only have one bed to give the young couple engaged / they will be married anyway ) do i just ask them if they would like to sleep together ? If not , then I can rent a bed or something.. the other family coming is a couple with three kids. i was planning to give them the family room with sectionals couches / ez boy recliner . there is more space there ? Or do you just ask girls to group in one room and guys in another ? Please advise what is appropriate / the best way to handle sleeping accomodations when someone comes to visit ? The families don't know each other well, so i was originally thinking that it should be dividied by family / they would enjoy more privacy. each would have a priv bathrom. Not sure/ideas

This tile looks to have been a soap holder that broke off - now I have this black tile with a big piece broken off. The tile work was probably done in the 1950's. Is there any way to remove that one tile and replace it?? IF so, how would I go about doing that?
Thanks -

When is the best time to run a soaker hose? In the day to keep the sun from completely drying out the soil, or during the night to make it so wet that the sun doesn't dry it out so much?
