I have a 20ft by 8ft space that will become divided into the living/dining space. This is a really long wall to decorate only with pictures. I am considering a crisp contemporary style wainscoting panel across it and then painting the top (wall part) a neutral color. The style will be classic contemporary with very clean lines. Is wainscoting a good idea here?

Yes! It will be very pretty. HGTV programs do this often for selling homes.

This is a great idea. Just make sure that you do not cut the room in half meaning that if your ceiling is 8' you would want to go about 36" for this treatment. Using a high gloss architect white is simply stunning. Paint doors and door jams all other moldings same white. Then go to top wall with a very neutral shade and you will love it.

Super...particularly if you're putting pictures up--good background for any kind of art [most galleries have plain white walls for that reason]. If you have lintels, jambs and such [e.g., wherever people might touch] use a semi-gloss or enamel [same colour] so you can get fingerprints off better. There are probably 25 different shades of 'white', so consider how the light will fall on your wall...get chips at the paint store and see which of the whites will be best. There are warm whites, cool whites, etc.

Wainscoting is a nice touch and is actually an expensive option in new home builds. So you are right on trend.

As long as the style compliments the surrounding areas.
