I'm buying a 79 stick built house in the seattle area. The home inspector can tell me whether there are signs of wood-eating pests, flood problems, but he can't open the walls to find out the quality and condition of wooden structures inside.

What is the best way to check the building quality and structural integrity of older house? What's the typical lifespan/problems for wooden houses of that age?

Thanks a lot!

I recently hired a contractor who had been doing some work to my home to build a 17Feet x 17 Feet wooden deck in my backyard.

The deck has two staircase entrances. It probably comes off the ground about 3 or 4 Feet high.

The contractor charged me $3,000.00 for the entire job that included his labor. The problem is that he has finished the building of the deck, but he did not stain it or include side panels on the bottom portion around the underside of the deck.

Should the painting and the closing of the bottom of the deck beincluded in the work? He told me that he would need to charge me another $3,000.00 to stain the deck, place paneling along the bottom sides to close it off, plaster those paneling sides and build a small bar that I want included on the deck.

The total for the deck is averaging out to about $6,500...Is this fair, or am I getting overcharged? Please Help!

I am attempting to create a lamp with 5 bulbs (Edison connections, 23W each fluorescents (100W incandescent EQ)) Connected to a standard wall outlet. I want to have a switch built into this, and would love to use a small toggle switch rated at 125VAC but I have no idea what amperage it needs to be rated at. I haven't done any projects with electricity in over 10 years and am afraid my memory has failed me on what all I need to worry about. If there is anything else other than the amp rating of the switch I am overlooking please let me know. Thanks!

We recently bought one and put it in our outdoor light. When I turn it on though it takes a few minutes for it to actually become bright. Is it slow because it is cold? If I put them in my indoor fixtures would they work faster?

I have a house with wide plank pegged hardwood flooring. I would like to match this hardwood in an attic renovation I'm planning. Are pegged hardwood floors still available? Do they cost more than standard hardwood floors? Also, my builder is suggesting 3/4 inch unfinished hardwood. Is this an expensive choice?

At night the tapping sounds are very noticeable (and a lot spookier!)
We have radiant heat under wide-board hardwood floors.

Is there a quick fix or should i just deal with it?

My fuel line is coming from the top of the tank to the furnace. When I changed the inline filter, I noticed the stop valve was also bad. So I went to home depot and got a new stop valve. Apparently fuel siphoned back to the tank during the process.

So far, I have added diesel in the inline filter and fired up the furnace with the bleed valve open in an attempt to make the fuel flow. I get all the fuel that I filled in the inline filter; after that bleed valve throws air for approx. 30 seconds and then furnace stops! Fuel just does not want to flow from my tank to the furance..... What do I do????
