How can I get rid of a raccoon that's appeared in my garage and still keep the garage safe and accessible for my outside cats?

You can rent a "Have a Heart" trap and humanely relocate Mr. Raccoon for twenty bucks or so. Bait it with a cracker dabbed in peanut butter.

Load him in the back of a pickup truck because in the "excitement" Mr. Raccoon WILL defecate and urinate all over themselves.

Drop the little rascal off at least 10 miles away; best is across from a major river, because they WILL find their way back if it was good eatin. What else have they got to do all day?

I have successfully trapped and relocated at least 2 dozen of the little cuties. Next door neighbor feeds them sandwiches!

Did I mention how much I hate raccoons?

With extreme difficulty. If it is easy for a cat, it will be almost wide open for a raccoon as they are very adept at opening closed items. You might need to investigate electronic locks on a cat door that respond to chips implanted in the cats' collars (or their implant chips if you have gone that route). No idea if such a thing exists, but if not get together with a techie and make it yourself. I'm sure it will create it's own market as dogs will also need it. Good luck.

I assume they are going after the food source (cat food). Unless you get rid of the food source or feed the cats only during the day then you have pet raccoons as well. To keep them out of garbage cans you can use moth balls in the cans. That is what we do...but if you are leaving food out, you can forget it. We just feed the raccoons too because we think they are rather cute.

It is really hard in the county to get rid of local animal species. Sometimes you can get versions from nature stores of fox, coyote etc. urine that you sprinkle around to ward them off. My only concern is that those smells would also freak out the horses. Other option is to feed the raccoons but away from the horses. If they have an easier food source they will leave the ones they are accessing now, alone.

If you poison the racoons, you'll also end up poisoning your cats. Shooting up your garage doesn't sound like a very smart idea either.

Here is the Website for Have a Heart Live Traps and other products that are for repelling racoons. You might ahve to capture your racoon and drive him to a park far away from your house to release him. Still I think it would probably be a better solution. Also, there might be more than 1 racoon.

If there is nothing to eat in the garage, the raccoon will lose interest. Food is the attraction, no attraction = no raccoon. Mostly.

Raccoones are cute, cuddly, furry and down right lovable. They are also #2 on the list of animals that carry rabies, in the wild. Dont take chances. Get a scatter-gun or poisen them. Sorry to say, but it is the truth. They are in the varmit family, same as rats.

Try poisoning what ever edible stuff in your garage. unless its already poisonouse to begin with, then this must not be ordinary raccoons.

High powered pellet rifle. About 1000 feet per second outta do. Shoot them with a lead pellet, they'll still be able to leave after being shot and they'll die somewhere else. So you dont have to clean up afterwards.
