I want to redecorate my bedroom in a true island/caribbean theme. I want it to be bright and beachy and cheerful and relaxing. I don't want it to end up TOO bright and plastic and cheapy. I'm really stuck on this. I hope you can offer help! Ideas, links to photos...thanks!

A wall mural to complete the room would be gorgeous. Look at the Carribean murals at http://www.walldecorshops.com/index.html.
They are fantastic and reasonable, From sunsets to beach scenes.

For decorating ideas its fun to poke around in "rate my room" section of HGTV.com. I think you can do a key word search in that section. Also try searching the entire HGTV.com for beach or carribean and bedroom.. I searched for ideas for my home office & got a list a mile long.

As for MY island ideas.. 2 popped into my head. First (& this would be my pick) I LOVE the British Colonial look.. where the furniture is dark wood and with some woven accents on it. I'd paint a nice cheery tropical green (not too loud) and go with a cream duvet or comforter. Then use yellow/gold and a deeper green as accent colors. The combination of dark wood with green, yellow/gold and white/cream is very fresh looking while looking warm and cheerful. And relaxing. I'd go with one of the ceiling fans that looks like palm leaves (dark wood). There are currently many accessories with palm trees that reflect this theme. I might select a few key pieces like accent pillows but keep the pattern to a minimum to keep the clean feeling. Think... island with windows open & long flowy white sheers .. this is the feeling I'm trying to invoke.. Oh, this would really make the room if you can swing it: gauzey sheer white/cream panels at the head of the bed or just at the side of the head of the bed.. to get the effect of a canopy or bed panels but keep it simple. And for privacy on the windows the wicker/bamboo/rafia shades that are multi color (like tortise shell).. or a plain medium gold-dark brown would be great.

The other thought is beachy but also incorporates zen & spa elements. Colors: light-medium aqua, a green similar in depth of tone.. then a golden tan color. Aqua or possibly green on the walls, then use the other colors for accent pillows and throws. Again, I think cream duvet, comforter (always looks serene) and gauzey white sheers. For lamps I'd use something brushed nickel and glass to keep the light flowing thru.. A nice abstract painting with the same colors that evokes a seascape (but not a realistic beach) or a large simple painting of a shell.. again, not detailed but more like an outline. If you have wood/tile floors you could use a sea grass or sisel floor covering. And large baskets for storage.. medium honey shade.

I tend toward being understated and subtle.. so these ideas may be not be beachy/island enough but maybe I've given you something to think about.

Sorry for being so long.. once one idea comes to mind the rest keep coming and don't stop. I've got to watch myself or the Yahoo Answers-police are going to shut me off :) Anyway have fun with it and hope it comes out exactly the way you want it to! :)

Hey There!

I was just browsing around on Yahoo Answers and came across this question of yours.

IKEA has a lot of tropical accessories especially with it being summer time its the perfect time to find them.

I also wanted to mention that I’m an IKEA Regional Manager and was informed of a private website at my last regional managers meeting that ended up to be a promotion we’re doing.

This website is giving away several hundred $1,000 IKEA Giftcards for just putting in your zipcode. It’s a marketing campaign they are doing to see what areas of the country people are interested in IKEA!

You can’t go wrong… Just put in your zipcode and get a $1,000 IKEA Giftcard.

Heck, you could even get the FREE Giftcard and sell it on ebay and go buy stuff somewhere else with the money you just made!

If interested view the source url.

Your best bet would be too make a room in this theme using a fish/ seashell look..the more sophicicated things not the cheap childish things you see. Use sea greens, and varying shades of blue..with a tan/ sand color accent.
i would start with your walls, pick the color you would like, and make it very light. Then I would use the other colors in your comforter/ accent pieces. Also get a live or fake plant(s) that you could use to bring in some darker green.

Some good pics and a quality site:
http://www.surferbedding.com/

Read the articles at:
http://www.totallytropics.com/index.html
for understanding tropical colors and textures and combinations.

The DIY Network is very popular and has some good ideas: http://www.diynetwork.com/diy/lr_design/article/0,2041,DIY_14074_2269701,00.html

Personally, I would have lots of bamboo furniture, palm fron window coverings, an old fishing net hanging across the ceiling and down one wall, parts of old boats (ie. lights, maybe a wood railing, etc.) and probably end up with something straight out of the Gilligan's Island tv show.

Go for articial palm trees, sea shells for decor . Blue or light shades of blue will be perfect for the walls.

Sea shells are totally in these days as far as decor goes . you will find some in TJ Max and homegoods .Also buy those paintings or wall arts which have a dried leaf or leaf picture in them. they look good.

Green also would look good on the walls.I would go for white furniture inside so that it doesnt over power the theme.

I think you should go with a canopy bed, they give a certain vacation, beachy look and color pale blue, pale green.
Good luck!

You could put a grass cloth covering on the walls:
