Has anyone else had this problem? How did you fix it?

Yes, I've had the same problem. I was thinking that I would
have to replace the cabinets, but just then the landlord came
in and saw the "whitish" cabinet doors. I was scared!! But
he kinda laughed and said, "Don't worry, that's an easy fix."
He just used furniture polisher remover all over the doors. Then (after the doors were dry), he re-applied furniture polish
on the doors and the job was done. The doors were refinished in less than three hours. Hope your fix is just as easy as mine turned out to be.

Use a mix of Tung Oil and colorant. Furniture polish is ordinary mineral oil and wax so that isnt permanent finish.

Tung oil will polymerize and form a varnish like finish that is permanent.

Get Tung Oil and and a tube of colorant to suit at Lowes and mix to suit and apply with a rag and rub it smooth.

This is a common way to repair old deteroriated varnish and polyurethane to make it good as new.
