Hi,
In my house the plaster ceilings have hairline cracks runing(usually) in rectangular shapes/patterns. And in most rooms one long crack that runs across the middle of the ceiling...

Any ideas what causes these cracks? I'm guessing that as it's teriary structure there is no major problem (I had a survey a while ago and no major structural issues showed up).

Hi,
In my house, on the side elevation, there is a missing air-brick(looks like the metal has just eroded away) at ground level. My house has a slate damp proof course. From ground level there is one row of bricks, then the slate...This missing airbrick is hidden by my bin area and has allowed lots of water and earth(it is at ground level) to get in. This has shown up as damp in the corresponding location inside (damp crumbling plaster just above the skirting board).

From the outside I put my hand in the airbrick space and pulled lots of earth out. It nearly covered the actuall airbrick space! So it looks like when it has been raining water and earth has washed down into the space where the airbrick should've been.

I know I need to replace the airbrick but is it worth pulling up the flooring in the living room aswell? What else should I need to do? I guess that having an airbrick means water can get in anyway...Is the damp problem just due to the lack of air circulation?

Those metalic (probably alluminium) gold background with black letters. Likes of Woolworths used to sell them on a revolving display thingy. All different sizes. No hardware shops seem to have them any more. Or does anybody know who makes them?

Am redecorating our bedroom and need advice on what colours to use. We want to have plain walls (replastered) but have lilac accessories i e bedcovers side lights etc. Don't really want plain white but not sure what colour will look ok and nothing too dramatic. Will also be buying a new carpet but again dont know what colour. Any ideas would be greatly appreciated.

My boyfriend just recently bought me a 30 year old yucca tree. But our house gets absolutely no light. The leaves are turning yellow, and I cant put it outside yet cause its way to cold hear on Long Island. I was hoping that it might servive the winter inside and once spring & summer comes i could put it outside where it will hopefully thrive. Will that work or is it hopeless? Thank You

In our household I'm the one who does all of the sewing because my wife doesn't know how so when my daughter was born I went and took a quilting class so I could make her baby blanket.

In front of my bathrub, the paint on the wood molding is really starting to chip off and it looks awful. I've tried just simply repainting, but it chips off soon. The problem is we bathe our toddlers in it, and they're extra spashy in the tub, so it gets wet often.

Any ideas on what I can do to paint this molding, but have the paint actually stay? (without having to buy new paint). Maybe some primers or protectants I can apply?

we recently bought a 12 year old house. Home inspection was fine.

The problem is if one of us is taking a shower and the other person runs the flush or runs any tap even in the kitchen, the water in the shower instantly becomes very hot. Almost buring the person taking a shower. So now inspite of having 3 bathrooms, we can only run 1 shower or tap at a time and make sure no one else in the house runs any other water source.

Any solution to this problem ?

The line that keeps backing up is a 10-15 foot section in the basement that opens in the middle of the floor. It's NOT the main access opening used for cleaning the lines.

The pipe is too narrow to get a snake into. Plunging doesn't always work. I'm looking for a better solution.

Half tempted to dig, remove and replace.

Ideas?
